I feel the need to buy a new duvet I have to say.

the kiddies are fine as their duvets fit in the machine, but mine is king sized and really doesn;t......and I don;t have a spare either in case of accidents (which I really keep meaning to do) so can;t even send off to the dry cleaners......

hmmmmm......yup.......shopping ais on the cards again.....oh the hardship

MaryAnnSingleton · 26/03/2008 11:52

the dry cleaners make you pay in advance to have them laundered as so many people dopn't bother picking them up again - is almost worth buying new ones, but a huge waste,I think.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 26/03/2008 12:00

one's in the machine now!

snowleopard · 26/03/2008 12:03

Surely sleeping under a dry-cleaned duvet is really bad for you as well?

I also tend to replace them eventually because they won't go in the machine. I do wash DS's.

Hanging them out in the line in sun and wind is a good alternative though. Mites don't like that.

But seriously - asthma issues aside - you do know we are all crawling with all kinds of bugs and mites anyway? We've lived with them for millennia... just don't think about it.

Oh well if you must...
Eyelash mites

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 26/03/2008 12:07

The reason why you weigh more in the evening than you do in the morning is answered... yuck, yuck, yuck!!!!

The article also didn't mention just how much sweat and lurgy the mattresses hold...

2GIRLS · 26/03/2008 15:02

Err, what the hell are eyelash mites???!!!!!!

snowleopard · 26/03/2008 15:05

They live in your eyelashes. All kinds of mites and smaller weeny bugs etc live all over you.

If you include the stuff inside you, I've read that 10% of your body weight is not you. It is other organisms that live in and on you.

2GIRLS · 26/03/2008 15:18

That's just lovely. Anyway, I knew I wasn't fat, at least 2 stone of that is mites. I feel so much better now.

So what are you really meant to do if you have a king size duvet???? I could have bought 2 brand new ones from Debenhams (in one of their sales) for the cost to have one cleaned in the special large machines at the dry cleaners! It is just utterly crazy! I mean, everyone talks about not wasting things and not throwing away perfectly useful things, but what are you meant to do when it costs more to clean them than to buy one new?

In USA (where I'm from) you could go to the self-service laundry places and use the extra large machines for about $3, if I remember correctly. Not that we used duvets over there, but rather "comforters" which are like a duvet without a removable cover (well sort-of anyway). So I think someone should force the prices down of laundry places so everyone can have clean duvets without having to constantly buy new ones!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 27/03/2008 23:27

i agree rachel - do not think i shall be wahing the double in my machine again!
