LiveLifeToTheFull2 · 04/03/2024 19:44

DS was sick all over his bedroom carpet last night and I am struggling to get rid of the smell 🤢
It was middle of the night so I just washed with soapy water after picking up the vomit with kitchen roll 😩
Today I've dettolled it and it just smells damp and vomity 🤢😩
Please help I feel like I've made it worse by wetting it but I don't know how to get rid of the smell.

You need an enzyme cleaner, something they sell in pet shops to clean up animal wee/poo/vomit. A popular brand is Simple Solution. It will break down the proteins causing the stench. They may sell it in other types of shop, but I've only bought it from pet shops before. Good luck!

Bicarbonate of soda in water and spray or sponge on, it’s alkali and neutralises the smell from the acidic puke.

sciencemama · 04/03/2024 20:09

Bicarbonate of soda or tonic water and then vax or something similar (scented powder to leave on then hoover up)

Brendabigbaps · 04/03/2024 20:11

I used one of those bottle carpet cleaners that you rub and leave to dry and then vac over. To a couple of goes before it went

Antibacterial mouthwash in a spray bottle, also good for spilled milk

Someone puked on poorly sealed floor boards in our house once. I tried various things, biological washing powder did it in the end.

Pink can Vanish carpet foam. It’s about £6. Excellent stuff and really deodorising. Worked for me on vomit on the car seats.

greeneggsandhamhocks · 04/03/2024 20:17

Our dog once got spectacularly carsick on a long journey. I chucked a load of cat litter everywhere which helped dry and deodorise it.
I'd clean your carpet with the enzyme cleaner recommended by pp then cat litter to absorb odour and moisture.

Loads and loads of baking soda. Not just a small baking tub, you can buy big tubs in the cleaning section of supermarkets or wilkos/B&M. Dump the whole pack over the offending area. Since it's wet you may need to rub it in a bit with hands or old cloth. Throw a towel loosely on top so no one treads it all over the house. Leave for a few hours, overnight if possible. Hoover it a lot. That should kill the worst of the smell of not all. If not then get that Dr what's his name pet cleaner with the brush as a handle. It kills bodily fluid odours well as contains enzymes.

I keep this at home at all times just in case of vomit. Scarred by the years of a v sicky toddler.

This!

I usually spread bicarbonate all over leave overnight and hoover next day

mamaison · 04/03/2024 20:35

I got the Marks and Spencer’s one in blue spray bottle. I cleaned with dish wash liquid in water and blotted up with towels. Then dabbed with peroxide from pharmacy. The M&S one got rid of the smell.

I wanted to use bicarbonate but it can damage your vacuum.

Toothpastestain · 04/03/2024 21:00

Antibacterial hand gell, works fab on car upholstery too

Do you out sodium bicarbonate on neat? Or mix it with water?

I mixed it water, 2-3 big spoonfuls in a pint ish of water and then added to a spray bottle itr I have just sponges on.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 04/03/2024 21:18

You shouldn't add more liquid - all that will do is soak through to the underlay and that won't dry properly at all

You need to get the carpet dry and deal with the smell later

So cat litter, bicarb, towels, whatever you have that will absorb the wet and then get carpet cleaner on or shake and vac or whatever later

PollyRuby · 04/03/2024 21:19

Biological washing powder in hot water

idontlikealdi · 04/03/2024 21:19

Bicarb or laundry liquid

Toddlerteaplease · 04/03/2024 21:22

Try Dr Beckmann pet stain remover. It cleans up cat pile beautifully.

greenacrylicpaint · 04/03/2024 21:30

enzyme cleaner (pet supplies) or bio washing powder piled upon the damp area. then hoover it up once dry.

Neat as your carpet is already wet. Just use it like the old school shake and vac. But more liberally. And leave it for longer before removing. The thing someone said about hoover damage may be possible - I've never broken one but had to take apart the filters and wash off the powder. Maybe use a dustpan and brush to remove the bulk of the powder before hoovering to finish.
