Fabric covered dining chairs

What is the best way to get these clean?

I've tried with soap and water and just made it worse with nasty tide marks

I'm working on the idea of re-upholstering when ds is old enough not to continue making them messy - sorry doesn't really help you

Thanks, I guess i'll need to hire a steam cleaner and give it a go.

I did really want those removable covers you can get but can't find any that fit these particular chairs.

Is re-upholstering expensive?

hi sooze, mine were disgusting, had them steam cleaned, still disgusting. couldnt find loose covers, they all seem to be calico and fit certain chairs, had a quote to re cover, £300 each. i gave them away, very good quality john lewis ones. now have £25 from john lewis to tide us over until we rip kitchen out.

My cleaner taught me this one: give them a spray with Vanish carpet spray, leave a few minutes and then wipe off with damp cloth. Brings them up a treat (and I speak as the mother of dcs who think chair covers are a perfectly adequate substitute for napkins). They are Ikea ones, btw, a sort of heavy duty linen-look stuff in dark blue.

Was looking into this as I have the same problem - can't vouch for these as haven't tried but at least Plumbs are a company I've heard of - cover 6 dining chairs for £199

I second the Vanish spray too. I am so fed up with spot cleaning my fabric seated kitchen chairs I have ordered new chairs from M&S

Look underneath the chairs and see how the fabric is fixed on, with luck it'll be staples.
I have IKEA Adam dining chairs bought in 2001 for £25 each. they originally had a dark blue fabric, which after a couple of years was really grotty.
I bought a really cheap fabric remnant (1.5m x 1.5 will do it), cut it into 4 pieces and stapled like crazy. That lasted three years then looked grotty again. So this time I did exactly the same with some leatherette fabric which I found in a sale. They look great. And I just wipe them clean.
This is much easier than I ever thought, costs a few quid and takes less than an hour.
You might have to pay out a few quid on a stapler (think I got mine at Staples(!)).
