What is the best way to get these clean?

I've tried with soap and water and just made it worse with nasty tide marks

Many Thanks

Maybe a steam cleaner?

indignatio · 25/03/2008 11:47

I'm working on the idea of re-upholstering when ds is old enough not to continue making them messy - sorry doesn't really help you

Thanks, I guess i'll need to hire a steam cleaner and give it a go.

I did really want those removable covers you can get but can't find any that fit these particular chairs.

Is re-upholstering expensive?

hi sooze, mine were disgusting, had them steam cleaned, still disgusting. couldnt find loose covers, they all seem to be calico and fit certain chairs, had a quote to re cover, £300 each. i gave them away, very good quality john lewis ones. now have £25 from john lewis to tide us over until we rip kitchen out.

My cleaner taught me this one: give them a spray with Vanish carpet spray, leave a few minutes and then wipe off with damp cloth. Brings them up a treat (and I speak as the mother of dcs who think chair covers are a perfectly adequate substitute for napkins). They are Ikea ones, btw, a sort of heavy duty linen-look stuff in dark blue.

Was looking into this as I have the same problem - can't vouch for these as haven't tried but at least Plumbs are a company I've heard of - cover 6 dining chairs for £199

I second the Vanish spray too. I am so fed up with spot cleaning my fabric seated kitchen chairs I have ordered new chairs from M&S

Look underneath the chairs and see how the fabric is fixed on, with luck it'll be staples.
I have IKEA Adam dining chairs bought in 2001 for £25 each. they originally had a dark blue fabric, which after a couple of years was really grotty.
I bought a really cheap fabric remnant (1.5m x 1.5 will do it), cut it into 4 pieces and stapled like crazy. That lasted three years then looked grotty again. So this time I did exactly the same with some leatherette fabric which I found in a sale. They look great. And I just wipe them clean.
This is much easier than I ever thought, costs a few quid and takes less than an hour.
You might have to pay out a few quid on a stapler (think I got mine at Staples(!)).
