Ingrained dirt and mould - what cleaning products

My house is disgusting and I hate it and I want to clean it.

It is a 1970s house.

There is ingrained dirt on the banisters etc, dirt on the walls, lots of dirt built in in tricky areas to remove it - in crevices etc. Really thick dirt built up on exposed pipework.

There is also mould on ceilings and walls.

Has anyone got any advice about how to clean it? Such as what sort of cleaning products and what sort of cleaning materials. I am in a bad financial situation so effective but cheaper products would be best for me.

Thanks.

There will be more people with better ideas than me I'm sure but I'd start with hot water, fairy liquid and a scrubbing brush on the dirty areas. Astonish mould spray is handy for our bathroom ceiling that's prone to mould so may work well for you too. Have plenty of cloths to hand to mop up and that should make a big difference pretty quickly.

I swear by pink stuff paste and magic sponges for tough marks.

A glass scraper only costs about £2 and will get really tough stuff off hard areas pretty easily.

And lots of coffee for you Brew

Microfibre cloths are fantastic can be washed over and over again. Also best cleaning products I've found are Elbow Grease spray and cream cleaner from Poundland. I also use black harpic for toilets and a limescale remover as I'm in a hard water area. That along with hot water should be enough to make a significant dent in your deep cleaning

Yes I agree. Rubber gloves, so you can have really hot water, a brush and scrubby sponge.

This for mould https://amzn.to/48qj2G8

For any kind of gloss paint or water resistant surface, just go with super hot water and any surfactant you already have - washing up liquid, concentrated multi-surface cleaner, even liquid hand soap or showergel is worth a try.
Washing up gloves so you can use really hot water, a bucket and some re-usable cloths and a scrubbing brush or old tooth brush for hard to reach corners.

Ventilation as a priority.. Bleach poisoning is a real thing. Ime.. Sugar soap is fab for nicotine stains.

If you have old towels which you no longer need cut up into largish pieces.Bio washing powder in hot water removes dirt easily but put on rubber gloves.Rinse well with clean warm water. If you are capable of painting look for a paint hub where people give away wanted paint. We have an amazng ne worth looking for or ask on Facebook

Slatternnomore · 23/02/2024 14:55

That's a really handy tip about the paint hub @Ragruggers . Really do need to repaint, but can't really afford to, so that's a great tip!

I'd actually go for sugar soap. It's sold in the wallpapering and painting section in B&Q, B&M etc.

Rubber gloves and 2 plastic buckets. One with clean hot water. One with hot water and sugar soap in it.

Microfibre cloth and a scrubby washing up brush.

Get scrubbing! Rinse out in the clean bucket. And just kept going.

I agree with @KeeeeeepDancing Sugar soap is brilliant for cutting through dirt, grease and grime.
If you feel the whole house needs doing then take the approach of 'how do you eat an elephant?' - one bite at a time!! So for example pick the stairs and do a thorough job before you move on. It is easy to lose enthusiasm if you get bored or disheartened by the sheer size of what needs doing. But you can feel positive when you can see what you have done!!

Thanks! I’ve done the downstairs hall and wall and doors today. Used hot water and washing up liquid, but will get some sugar soap too. It’s nice to see the progress already, but still a long way to go.

That anti-mould product was amazing @Cheeesus . The mould just fell right off! Thanks for the recommendation!
