Found this at the back of cupboard under sink, any ideas what it is ? (Pencil for scale )

It's to put water in to fill up your iron.

The blue bit is a filter.

If you don't have one of these, use your tumble dryer water. Irons suffer from limescale, so if you don't want to buy cleaning tablets or buying deionised water etc, the condensed water from a dryer or dehumidifier works just as well.

We live in a soft water area so would we need to use it for the iron ?

Less so, but still likely. You can tell by looking inside your kettle. If it still looks pristine and the metal is 'metallic', probably not. If you see any white coating, yes.

It's not absolutely necessary to use distilled/condensed water, but it will make appliances that use water last longer.
