How to clean cloths used to clean bathroom?

FineCotton · 15/02/2024 02:06

When I put bathroom cleaning cloths into the new front loader washing machine I run them once on a full circle once with just water. Then I add a bit of a laundry detergent and do a second cycle to get the cloths properly clean, and its then that I end up with water and suds all over the floor from the machine leaking.

The machine does not leak when doing other laundry loads. Just the cleaning cloths.

I don’t know how to get the cloths clean enough without using some detergent. Traces of the cleaning products must still be present on the second cycle and when mixed with detergent it causes the overflow.

How do others clean their bathroom cleaning cloths?

TIA

Steep in a basin or sink in dettol and boiling water.

caringcarer · 15/02/2024 02:44

I used the blue disposable ones on a big role. I use 2 clothes each time I clean bathroom. They are not expensive and probably cheaper than trying to clean and reuse them.

Happydays321 · 15/02/2024 02:53

How much cleaner are you using? I wash my cleaning cloths with biological powder and never have any problems. I give them a quick rinse under the tap that's all.

FineCotton · 15/02/2024 03:04

Thanks @caringcarer . I was thinking it was best to use the reusable cloths for the environment but it’s not good for the environment when I’m using a ton of water to get them clean.

Thanks @Northernsouloldies I was going to do something similar with hot water in a bucket but when I looked up the directions/warnings on the cleaning products I use, they instruct not to use the sprays with hot water (fumes I guess) so I might have to look at changing the cleaning products I use.

HG bath shine is a great product, smells fresh and you don't need much of it.

BingoMarieHeeler · 15/02/2024 03:17

I’m sure this will outrage people but I just wipe the bathroom with loo roll (plus cleaning product, hope that’s obvious) and flush it. Everyone has survived to be perfectly hale and hearty thus far.

But then I did use cloth nappies so wouldn’t really think twice about putting a cleaning cloth in the washing machine 😵‍💫

I do the same

All cleaning cloths, tea towels, face flannels, car washing cloths, washing up cloths etc go in the machine together for a 1hr 60° wash with powder, then I add clothes and run a full clothes cycle with the cloths and clothes.

You're getting excess suds and flooding because you're adding detergent to a small load with not much dirt.

FineCotton · 15/02/2024 05:57

Thanks again people.

I know the residue of the bathroom cleaning products in the cloths combined with the small amount of laundry detergent is causing the water to suds up and overflow.

So I’m going to stop using detergent completely with the cleaning cloths, and just use some disinfectant to wash them in the washing machine and dry in the sun. That should get them clean enough, yeah?

The old front loading washing machine I used to have never leaked sudsy water onto the floor. This fairly new one seems to be sudsing up more. It does seem to get clothes cleaner than the old one did.

I just throw them in with the usual white wash.

Soontobe60 · 15/02/2024 06:08

My god, what a faff!
I clean my bathroom using a bathroom spray, wipe over with a cloth, rinse the cloth in hot water then all the cloths go in the washer with tea towels, kitchen cloths and hand towels on a 60 degree wash.
Stop wasting water and energy folks!!!

AlisonDonut · 15/02/2024 06:15

I just use them and thrown them into the washing basket. They get washed along with everything else.

I think you might have some sort of germ phobia if you are going to these lengths. This is not normal.

Yup , wouldn't think of doing anything else

Ciri · 15/02/2024 06:17

Err? They just go into the normal wash with everything else.

MiltonNorthern · 15/02/2024 06:17

Why do you think bathroom cloths need special washing? They only need washing in the machine along with everything else. They are no dirtier than well worn clothes, underwear, kids clothes will be.

cuckyplunt · 15/02/2024 06:22

Wash them at 60c.
it’s human faecal bacteria that you are concerned about and they are dead long before that temperature.

greenacrylicpaint · 15/02/2024 06:22

if you are so environmentally concious the only cleaning products you use are soap (aka all purpose cleaner) and vinegar anyway.
cleaning cloths can just go in the washer with the next load.

unless you have someone immunocompromised in your household or you just came out the other side of a d&v bug or other highly infectious disease there is no need to wash cleaning stuff separately at a high temp.

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/02/2024 07:07

If I think they are particularly filthy (maybe from cleaning off mould) I soak them in cold water and a little bleach before washing. Our bathroom cleaning cloths are blue (yellow for kitchen, anything colour for anything else) and they get washed in with the coloured towels wash on 60.

For cleaning the surfaces of the loo I use a couple of sheets of economy recycled kitchen roll and Method or Ecover bathroom spray. Any old pine cleaner in the bowl.

BabySleep10Weeks · 15/02/2024 07:23

I just put them on a normal wash with everything else and I'm a self confessed germaphobe. The antibac/bleach sprays you use when cleaning will kill germs anyway

Yep! Me too.
We’ve survived unscathed into our 70’s so obviously it’s safe ffs!

“The antibac/bleach sprays you use when cleaning will kill germs anyway. “

This is what I figured. Thank you.

I appreciate the input.

I agree with the comment up thread about soaking the cloths in disinfectant after cleaning. Just cheap pine disinfectant will be enough.

Caterina99 · 15/02/2024 08:56

I just put them in the washing machine with whatever load happens to be on. Never had any issues!

mondaytosunday · 15/02/2024 09:01

I use a sponge and just chuck it after a few uses. I'm using it with Flash. I wipe down the sink and surrounds with Dettol wipes in between scrubs.
@BingoMarieHeeler I'm surprised toilet paper is strong enough - doesn't it come to pieces (plus I've had to clear sink drains if toilet paper the kids have left in there - yuck)?

muddyford · 15/02/2024 09:02

I just bung them in with everything else.
