How to clean around dusty edges of carpet and stairs?

I have a cream wool carpet in the bedrooms and it's looking very great around the edges due to dust. I have a shark hoover with a different attachment and it's not sucking anything up. Also finding the stairs difficult to clean with attachment with hair and dog fluff not budging, it's driving me crazy!

I use the brush from a dustpan and brush,

My hoover also struggles on stairs.

I have a similar issue with my old Dyson which I’ve always hated - I was considering a Shark - but now maybe not!

toothbrush

Rub over with a damp cloth to gather them up or try a lint remover.

Galeforcewindatmywindow · 14/02/2024 14:46

Rubber gloves....

booktokbear · 14/02/2024 14:48

Use one of these.They're fantastic.

CheerfulBunny · 14/02/2024 14:57

Oo, thanks @booktokbear I've ordered one of those. I don't think OH ever used to do any cleaning before I moved in 😟 so we've got some of these 'grey' corners. My Shark doesn't tackle the stairs very well either.

FurryPawsSnaggleTooth · 14/02/2024 15:05

I have a shark and its shit. I had a henry with the crevice suction tool and it did edges fine.

ThirdStorm · 14/02/2024 15:17

I don't think the lint remover really gets into the edges although they are brilliant in general. My mum swears by the damp cloth method too but I fear I'm too lazy to bother!

Totallybannanas · 14/02/2024 15:29

Thanks yeah not finding the shark great for edges or crevices! And the attachments aren't Greta either. Will try the roller, shaver and snap clothe method!

I can vouch for the efficacy of the "lint remover" upthread. I wouldn't put them near sisal or similar, though.

We have two hairy cats and I found the sole of a pair of crocs could extract a lot of hair from carpets.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 14/02/2024 17:26

Not particularly quick but you could try sticking masking tape down hard and pulling up all the dust

RokaandRoll · 14/02/2024 17:27

I have a rubber brush and find ut works really well. I bought it from https://musthaveideas.co.uk/products/better-brush I prefer the mini brush that comes free with the big brush!

I lightly scrub edges with an anti bac wipe or similar, it’s very effective.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/02/2024 17:33

When it gets like that I book the carpet cleaner man.

Legacy · 14/02/2024 17:35

It may not just be dust, it may be dirt which has become ingrained into the carpet fibres - think it's called 'filtration' marks?
We had it at a rental property and I got rid of it by using carpet shampoo with a narrow brush like this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00215M8BQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

Yes, get a Henry and use the long thin attachment.

Bit the dark round the edges will need scrubbing off - it’s dirt coming up from the floor underneath, very common if you’re in an older house. Even when you’ve used filler to seal the gaps round the edge of the boards, it will perish over time and then dirt comes through.

I’ve managed to fade it by scrubbing with biological washing powder and then using my Vac to rinse it out, but the only solution I’ve found is to never buy pale carpets again, or at least not while we’re in an older house.

Mosaic123 · 14/02/2024 23:02

We had this dark edge on cream carpets in a 1930s home. It was the unsealed edges under the carpet.

Solution in our case was laminate floors.

JanglingJack · 14/02/2024 23:07

I use my Henry without the 'pole'?! Just with the nozzle, everything goes straight up. I tend to use this on my rugs and sofas too as we have 2 cats 🙄

JanglingJack · 14/02/2024 23:09

I've got a Dyson pet ball roller upright that is in the way and useless... If anyone wants to buy? 🤣

You mean it’s just collecting dust.

Oblomov24 · 15/02/2024 04:30

I find a hoover just doesn't work. I need to (very) occasionally get down on my hands and knees with a wet wipe over my finger, and dig away at it, rub my finger down the edge of the carpet. It only takes a few minutes to do each wall edge.

Hopeandmoss · 15/02/2024 07:19

Definitely what @booktokbear uses. They are amazing for crevices and stairs (but be prepared to be disgusted with what comes up!
