Vomit on carpet (sorry)

Apologies for the revolting image but my daughter vomited on carpet and I’ve shampooed it twice with a vax but it still smells as bad. It’s been over a month now. Should I just keep shampooing? I’ve used dettol, soaps, that small disinfectant mrs hinch made famous and various other things. I have a neutrolol air freshener next to the area. It’s still awful.

I’ve tried soaking the area and scrubbing and then using vax to suck up. Still smells terrible.

jts not my home we are renting. If it was mine I’d cut the carpet up it’s that bad. She also pooped on the carpet in her bedroom and that’s never smelled fresh in her room since then.

just wondering if anyone who os much better at housekeeping than me has any advice?

(I will lose the deposit to pay for this and I’m perfectly happy to pay. We have damaged the carpets.)

It sounds like it soaked down through the carpet into the underlay. Have you tried blanketing the whole area with baking soda and letting it sit for a while before hoovering it up? or spraying it all with a solution of white vinegar and water?

Thank you. I have tried vanish piercer and vacuuming. I’ve scrubbed and soaked.

it’s a very thin carpet and it’s over floorboards. If it has underlay it’s very thin. The nails of floorboards have come through this carpet in the same area. I can’t understand why it’s so bad but I think maybe just that I’m not used to carpets.

the carpet where my daughter pooped is brand new white thick carpet and would have new underlay I’m sure. This was also terribly difficult to clean and I feel the room still smells. Both times we have rushed to clean up immediately but it’s awful.

I’ll try the baking soda and the vinegar.

if anyone reading this has any other tips please let me know!

and I feel very bad for this damage and will certainly be paying the landlord. I think he wouldn’t be too worried about the staircase Area with the vomit- because the carpet is very old and he would replace In time. But the brand new bedroom one I think he would want to be paid for. This is just a separate issue but it’s my first time renting privately and I am very responsible and careful normally. We won’t have the house for too long so I would like to have it smelling fresh and being clean but I feel the smell hits you as soon as you open the front door.

Try this -

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/dr-beckmann-pet-stain-odour-remover-650ml

Works well for cats!

bfsham · 10/02/2024 18:17

Yes get the dog piddle remover stuff

Sunday12 · 10/02/2024 18:20

Thank you so much! I’m going to the supermarket this evening so I’ll try it. I think I’ve actually looked at this and thought about trying but then thought it can’t be as good as all the soaking and scrubbing I’ve done. But it does target these particular smells so for £3 I’ll give it a go! (I’ve also got pets and the smell also is quite bad from their litter area! I’m lucky that my landlord seems very kind and easy going!)

Bicarbonate of soda always works. It’s the Dr Oetker (sorry spelling) tubs in the baking aisles of any supermarkets. Next to the flour and baking powder etc. DS vommed over the back of the car driving seat and all over his own car seat when he was about 3 and dousing all areas with bicarb - then crucially, leaving for at least 24 hours - before vacuuming off just magically lifted it.

Buy 3 tubs, will probably be about a fiver in total. Amazing stuff, with 3 kids and pets over the last 20 years I get twitchy if there’s none in the house!

Amazing thank you. I’ve just got In from shopping so I’ll get three tubs tomorrow. I wonder how it works? I’ll try it in the poo room too but the poo incident was over a year ago so don’t know if it will make a difference now.

ive just bought the dr beckman pet product recommended above so I’ll try this now.

No worries and good luck @Sunday12 yes I should Google how bicarb works, no idea but it just does 😊

Diluted vinegar

I know this works because I had to ask my DM how get the vomit off my sofa when DS was a baby

StarTwirl · 11/02/2024 00:23

Just used distilled vinegar

I had to use white wine vinegar because that's all I had in at the time

I now always have some distilled vinegar in the house

StarTwirl · 11/02/2024 00:24

Bicarbonate is great too

StarTwirl · 11/02/2024 00:25

But I'd use the bicarbonate after the vinegar if you need too

Sycamoretrees · 11/02/2024 00:54

You need an enzyme cleaner specifically designed for vomit, the enzymes break down the proteins and eliminate the smell. Only thing that worked when i needed to remove the vomit smell from my car. You can buy them in pet shops or from amazon. Just Googe enzyme cleaner for vomit. Worth every penny.

Thank you. I had no idea about this and didn’t know the smell would stay so strongly. I wish I’d posted this thread last month when it happened!

I didn't either till a child literally exploded with vomit in my car, there wasn't a surface that wasn't covered! I cleaned the mess and drove around with the windows open for days but the smell was just awful, then I read about enzyme cleaners on here and gave it a try, it got rid of the smell almost instantly! Such a relief, friends were suggesting i'd have to buy a new car. 😂

So revolting isn’t it? I don’t understand why the smell is so strong and persistent. It’s right outside my bedroom too!

Let us know what works! Fingers crossed!

Sunday12 · 13/02/2024 23:32

I’m here with an update - I cannot believe it but the smell has gone!

first I tried the pet spray recommended above. It definitely helped but did not remove the smell completely.

then I found I had an unopened tub of bicarbonate of soda in the cupboard so I dumped that on the worst part of carpet. Waited 24 hours and vacuumed and goodness the difference is incredible I’m so relieved and I’m going to buy a few more tubs of bicarbonate it’s magical!

thanks all- I wish I’d come to this board when if happened instead of suffering for a month!

@Sunday12 glad it's sorted! Think the pet spray works best if you do it straight away.

Result!

You can buy big tubs/boxes of bicarbonate in the cleaning section rather than baking section - like the size of a bag of flour rather than buying loads of wee baking tubs, much better value. It's magic, I had a constantly vomiting toddler for years and it works so well. I saw the big boxes in B&M last week. I always have it in just in case. And also the pet cleaner mentioned is great for mishaps from the other end of toddlers!
