Security cameras and cleaner

We have a lovely longstanding polish cleaner (who has little English) but I have just got two security cameras due to local break ins and also to stop the dog jumping up on our sofa when we aren’t in. One camera looks out to the drive and the front door and the other captures the lounge and back door. I don’t want her to think we are spying on her work or the time she comes and goes as the reason for the cameras is unrelated to her.

are there any rules about having cameras when people are working in your home. Do I have to tell her and if so how…!
I don’t feel it is fair to her not to tell her.
my husband hates them and thinks we should turn them off on the day she is here but I think that defeats the purpose.

Turn them off on her days. Otherwise it does look like you are spying on her.

Please tell her. Cleaner here and just noticed 1 at a new job. Probably caught me singing whilst vacuuming but still feel a divvy!

I would just tell her and tell her the reason. If I was working at someone's house, I wouldn't mind a camera if I didn't have anything to hide. Their house, their rules.

Make her aware as it isn’t there to check on her. I’d want to know.

SD1978 · 07/02/2024 07:16

So you don't want her to feel checked on/ watched, but don't see why you should turn them off when she's there. So you do want to monitor her. I assume they are controllable on an App, so yes, they should be turned off or she should be informed. Otherwise you're doing exactly what you claim you allegedly don't want to do.

Could be wrong but I thought you had to let it be known if security cameras were in use.

How does the camera stop the dog going on the sofa when you’re not there?

PandorasTin · 07/02/2024 08:05

My ILs have proper CCTV all over the house in and out. Carer and cleaner and gardner visit. Dont know if theyve ever been told but their very obvious.

You should tell her, I would want to know if I was being filmed! Tell her you won't be watching her on them or turn them off the days she's there, but you definitely need to tell her!

PuttingDownRoots · 07/02/2024 08:15

Tell her you have a camera for the dog in the lounge but are happy to turn it off when she's there. And turn them off when are home anyway.

So many people have outside cameras, you just need the appropriate signs but mention its there.

If I turn them off I won’t see the car on the drive which is where things have been stolen from and cars stolen from the street but obviously this will incidentally catch her coming and going times. But I don’t expect her to monitor the car and drive when she is there- hence leaving the camera on.
i have turned the one that looks into the garden room to face out and to cover the back door only when she is there so no inside part of the house is monitored when she is there but the drive and back door are covered. She has relied to my message saying she has no issue with the cameras at all. I thought it respectful to let her know they are there.

It alerts me if he jumps up and I can press a button and shout at him to get down through the camera. We have only had them for a week- he seems very confused to hear my voice but does get down. He vomitted on the new sofa when we were out, that and a recent burglary from our car out front of the house was the final straw to me getting two cameras.
