What is one thing that has made your life easier or been a game changer?

Mine is to batch cook - so it means that mid week I don’t have to cook and have a huge mess. This frees up time to get another job done.

also a cordless vacuum is a game changer. Plus I put a short cycle wash on each night so the washing doesn’t pile up.

itsmeagainagain · 05/02/2024 20:46

start on the left. I walk into a room and start tidying, cleaning from the left and work round the room. It's great it if you are feeling overwhelmed. Also I love to get a bin bag and just go from room to room emptying bins, throwing stuff away its a quick win. My favourite is to set a timer for half an hour or an hour whatever and just do whatever I can in that time

This is insane. It takes me 10 mins to clean whole bathroom once a week. Same for kitchen. Floors twice a week is mad.

It's not insane! I'm not that poster but I agree with her approach.

It takes 20 - 30 min for me to clean my bathroom (the same again for my en-suite, a little less for downstairs cloakroom).

So it's longer than 10 min but still not that long. But it's getting started I hate, like that poster if I break it into separate jobs, it's easier.

Floors twice a week is just basic hygiene! My tiled kitchen & hall probably need cleaning daily, I aim for every second day. How would that be excessive?

To realise that life is too short for cleaning all the time and that the world does not fall in if I do not bother too much about it. I just have more time to do what I find enjoyable.

that despite all the labour saving devices invented women are their own worst enemies and rather than enjoying the time they have saved by using these devices, they instead find more and more elaborate ways and excessively high standards to clean to. And then get very huffy if told they are cleaning excessively while accusing others (who probably have perfectly acceptable levels of cleanliness) of being dirty and unhygienic. When in reality they have a problem.

Don't get worked up about it and delegate to other members of the household to make a fair load. Don't have impossibly high standards.

I'm totally confounded by the millions of women who now claim their Anxiety is heightened by having a less than perfect house. It's all fuelled by stupid cleaning accounts on Instagram etc. Mrs Hinch has a lot to answer for.

Well said

@HowDoTheyGetThroughLife are you married to my husband???? JUST NOW ... he has not been well for a few days so spending alot of time resting in bed. He walked out to the kitchen which i JUST finished cleaning , he put a snot rag and an empty gatorade bottle on the counter. RIGHT ABOVE THE FRIGGING GARBAGE CAN in the cupboard below. Wish I could build a patio but I am on the second floor and a huge pool is right below. Maybe I could drown him? lol. seriously he is a fantastic husband in every other way, just not as neat and tidy as I am. Its ok. I have my faults too.

No, you are married to mine😉
I was about to answer ditch the husband…. But I adore him!

Employ a cleaner.

Such inspiring advice.

LunaTheCat · 05/02/2024 22:45

Actually my other mantra is that nothing takes as long as you think. Say you will give yourself 5 or 15 or whatever time..it’s amazing what you can do!

Supersimkin2 · 05/02/2024 22:48

Use all the ways housework does itself.

1 robovac & open windows daily.
2 when moving, carry something there.
3 And back.
4 wipe kitchen/do the bins when boiling kettle.
5 One in, one out.

Snippit · 05/02/2024 22:53

Good old soda crystals, absolutely marvellous. Brilliant for cleaning stubborn marks on a stainless steel hob. They can be used for virtually anything, but I do believe that using them on granite worktops is a no no, 😬

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/02/2024 22:57

I'm not a fanatical cleaver, but I think it's important that everything has a place in the house. It makes it so much quicker if you know where things live, and take them there on the way to other rooms/places.

Moier · 05/02/2024 23:16

Have a cleaner..
I'm one of the lucky ones.
( l am disabled,).

Agree and declutter. The less stuff you have the less to clean and gather dust

@LunaTheCat hahahaha.. yes I kinda like mine too. not in LTB territory at all. In fairness to him. He is truly ill. He has dengue and just out of the hospital (we live in the tropics) He is never a dressing gown of doom type of guy , but yesterday I would have said different. I was in the pool having a rare chat, just saying how sick he was to a lovely lady visiting here this week. He came out on balcony and motioned me upstairs and of course since he was so ill I went running. Terrified his fever was back up or he was having another issue. NOPE. the fucker was hungry. seriously he was HUNGRY. I admit to telling him off..there is a fridge full of food but he has never turned a stove on. I made him something to eat but I may have bitched a little. lol. right now he is in bed and needs to eat his dinner there as he is too weak. great . that means I walk the dogs again tonight alone. uggh. MEN. I always tell him...if I killed you the first time I thought about it..I would be out of jail by now. But I love him and he would do anything for me

Babla · 05/02/2024 23:39

Get a cleaner

caringcarer · 05/02/2024 23:46

I operate a one in one out policy. If I buy something new eg new Yorkshire pudding tray, then the old one is binned or given away.

Steam mop was a game changer.

RoseMarigoldViolet · 06/02/2024 12:52

Declutter - less stuff makes a big difference.

Teach your kids to tidy and do house jobs - right from when they are toddlers have tidy up time at the end of the day, they pick up a few toys and put them in the box. Keep adding age appropriate tasks until you end up with teenagers who can do most house stuff. Instil the idea that the family is a team with everyone doing their part to keep it working smoothly. “You’re an eater, you’re a helper!”

Numberfish · 06/02/2024 19:39

cloppyklip · 05/02/2024 15:43

A few things! Robot vacuum, white vinegar spray for cleaning glass, mirrors and stainless steal - no streaks and cheap. Half a lemon and bicarb for the oven (so much easier and cheaper than chemicals) bleach down the toilets every night.

Not bleach down the toilet every night?! There’s a massive problem with resistant bacteria so you can’t just flush it out into the world for no reason! Just clean your toilet with a bit of soap, you don’t eat out of it.

Fundays12 · 06/02/2024 19:57

Don't keep junk or clutter it's easier to keep a house clean without it.

Put things away as you go along
Teach your kids up tidy and clean up after themselves (good lifeskill to have)
Do a clothes wash daily
Set a weekly cleaning routine which is manageable.

HuntingoftheSnark · 06/02/2024 19:59

Live alone.
Work outside of the home during the week.
Invite at least one person over every weekend.

coodawoodashooda · 06/02/2024 20:01

Declutter ruthlessly
