Recommend me a mat for muddy paws

I have a bog monster spaniel, two cats and a young toddler.

Can you recommend me a really good, washable, dirt-catching mat? Regular doormats aren't cutting it.

I think I need a long runner type at the front door (for the pram) & a deeper, wider mat at the back door (so idiot dog doesn't leap over it... I've tried training him to wipe his paws, but its slow progress & I have my hands full).

Caveat is they must be machine washable (9kg drum) & ideally under £30 each.

Thanks @TwattingDog. I think I'd rather have a flat mat-type so I can hoover up the dried mud etc in-between washes, & I think I'd need something longer by the front door to do the pram wheels.

Is there an IKEA store within reasonable distance of you @AwkwardPaws27?

AwkwardPaws27 · 03/02/2024 11:59

@Anotherselfemployedcleaner
Yes there is

We have LVT flooring downstairs and I tend to just use a sweeping brush and dustpan for the loose stuff and a squirty mop for the paw prints
Our dog is currently going through )another!) phase of digging holes in the garden 🤯 so mud everywhere

@AwkwardPaws27 Ok, this isn’t a perfect solution but it does work and is definitely within your budget.

I’ve got two dogs, and have tried lots of cheapie machine washable/rubber backed rugs/runners over the years, but they either don’t wash well and crease badly and/or the backing starts to break down (which is a massive pain when it leaves bits in the machine). Turtle/Hug rugs are brilliant (my clients have them) but are £75 plus for a runner - so totally out of budget.

The best solution I’ve found are the IKEA Tiphede rugs - in black/natural colour. The two sizes I use are an 80x150 runner in the hall, and a 120x180 rug by the back door. They’re made of cotton and the best way to describe them would be a like a very, very heavy upholstery type fabric.

You can vacuum them on a very low setting, but I find it much easier to shake them, then if necessary go over them lightly with a carpet rake to remove hair before washing. They wash really well but better to keep the spin speed as low as possible to avoid too many creases (I use 800rpm - takes a bit longer to dry though).

Price wise, the runner is £9, the rug is £10, and both will fit in my 9kg machine together.

You can get two of each size, plus a carpet rake (from Amazon, this one) for the grand total of £43.29 - that gives you a spare of each to use whilst the other ones being washed. You might need some non-slip backing, IKEAs Stopp Filt works for me, one pack is enough to cover the area under both for £6.50.

The back has a seam - the pic shows a corner of right/wrong side up - but I’m not worried about it showing so I use both sides before washing. If the weathers REALLY foul, however, I’ve got a couple of old single duvet covers to chuck over the top to mop up the worst, as they’re quicker to wash and dry.

Definitely worth going to have a look!

@Anotherselfemployedcleaner thank you - that is really helpful! I'll definitely have a look at those (& any excuse to go get meatballs...).

Have you come across Pet Rebellion at all? I am very tempted by their range but wonder if they'll have the issue of flaking rubber... (https://petrebellion.co.uk/product/stop-muddy-paws-by-the-metre-victorian-tile/)

Stop Muddy Paws By The Metre – Victorian Tile

Cut to size or even join together for total floor protection. Ideal for porches, outhouses and doggy areas and excellent for use inside crates as fully machine washable. Stop Muddy Paws pet barrier rugs are the best way to stop mud from your dog’s fee...

I'm lazy Grin (and also sleep deprived, working full-time & studying).
I want to try & minimise the cleaning.

lol it only takes a
Few
Minutes but
Get the sleep deprived and knackered ... I'm FT, mum if 2 ND kids and literally collapse at weekends 😋 thankfully we have a cleaner who does our floors regularly so it's not always a pain 😝
Enjoy your studying

I got the large size of this for our back door and it's been life changing https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BDD4V71D?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details no more muddy dog paw prints all over the laminate floors.

FruitBat53 · 03/02/2024 19:45

I've got two incredibly mucky spaniels and I've got several Hug Rugs in the kitchen. Most of the time they look new just from hoovering but they do get a wash in the machine every couple of weeks too. I've got a big square inside the back door, then a runner and another big square one in front of the utility sink.

My dog's a mud-magnet spanner as well.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 03/02/2024 19:47

I always buy the heavy rubber backed, washable Turtle Mats. They wash well and last for years. You can quite often get a good deal on them on ebay. Turtle are the best, not so keen on Hug rugs, i dont think they are as good quality.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/02/2024 19:47

TwattingDog · 31/01/2024 19:10

Easiest option would be a couple of those thick bobbly bathmats: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/toftbo-bath-mat-light-pink-30517025/#content

I have a washable runner from B&M at the front door which has a similar top to the bathmats but after a few washes, the rubber backing is going. When it gives up, I'm switching to those!

I came on to say this. They are absorbent and easily washed.

SnapdragonToadflax · 03/02/2024 19:49

Turtle mats. They're great, seem to absorb muddy footprints instantly. Wash well. I have two cats and a small child.

Ohnoooooooo · 07/02/2024 09:51

I also buy turtle matts. More expensive than your budget but they are both machine washable and can be dried in the dryer and last for years and years so a good investment. You can get discount codes 10/15% off.

AwkwardPaws27 · 07/02/2024 20:46

The turtle mats sound great but are a bit too pricey & DH wasn't keen on any of the designs.

We've bought these mats from Pet Rebellion to try - got 20% off so got two for under £50, plus a smaller one for under the water bowl.

AwkwardPup is pleased & they do seem to be catching more than the previous door mats so I'm pleased.
