Removing perfume smell from polyester jacket

I bought an amazing jacket from a charity shop - I didn't notice when I was trying it on the really strong perfume coming off it.

It says dry clean only but as it's polyester I've put it on a delicate wash with no spin in the washing machine. I've tried:

  • airing it outside (was tempting to see if 50mph winds would help)
  • spraying with 70% rubbing alcohol
  • white wine vinegar with a regular wash
  • soaking with baking soda and water

None of these have worked so far - I can smell the perfume even when it's soaking wet.

I realised I should have used white vinegar so that's arriving today. I also have vodka to try - I've seen recommendations to spray it on. Once it's dry I'll try to pack it with a box of baking soda and newspapers too for a week and see if that does anything.

Does anyone have any further advice? I can also take it for dry cleaning but I don't want to spend more on treating the jacket than I actually spent on it. 😅 I can't bear the smell of someone else's perfume - if nothing works I'll take it back to the shop for a refund or just give it back.

It's quite a musky perfume too if that makes any difference.

Also seen recommendations for Castile soap which I'm considering.

The white vinegar should do it. 50ml straight into the drum.

Try airing outside again for a few hours on a sunny day, inside out as well - the sunshine usually disinfects any whiffs away, though strong perfume might take a while.

Thank you, tried soaking in baking soda, then white vinegar, then vodka! The vodka worked best, though the fragrance has not been eliminated completely. I'm going to dry it out and see how it is, then maybe give it another splash of vodka or rubbing alcohol.

If you have a shed or greenhouse, hang it in there for a week - the smell will go.

I have an actual fragrance allergy. Sometimes even new clothing items arrive contaminated and I start getting hives just from opening the package.

for the worst of them
I generally go with a multi-day soak in white vinegar, followed by a week outside. Direct sunlight helps. Then several heavy duty washes. I check daily to see if I can move an item in on the next phase. So far, every garment has survived, but if something ever gets ruined, I figure I was going to have to throw it out anyway because of the scent, so it’s no big loss.
