Think I have a dead mouse somewhere lurking in my kitchen. Of course I am hunting for the little terror - but what happens if I can't find it? Smell is HORRENDOUS (only since yesterday!) thx

Urgh - my sympathies - we've had this before and no mistaking the smell, nothing quite matches it.

Hope you find it soon.

Strangermanger · 23/01/2024 13:59

Had it in my tiny bathroom once. Afraid to say we just had to wait as it was somewhere inaccessible. I still think of it - one of the worst smells of my life. Lasted about 2 weeks…..

CherryRipe1 · 23/01/2024 14:00

Urgh yes, rotten musty gone off peas. It will go eventually.

Bestinshow22 · 23/01/2024 14:09

We had a dead rodent smell emanating from the understairs cupboard (something the cat had brought in and then expired). We couldn't find it, the smell lasted two weeks.

A few months later I found it in a carrier bag - it was a tiny shrew. I couldn't believe the stench from something so small.

FoFanta · 23/01/2024 14:11

We had that last year - you could taste it! Couple of weeks and it will fade. Sympathies!

Amazon.co.uk : dead mouse smell remover These are pretty effective. There is still a smell but less offensive.

HappiestSleeping · 23/01/2024 14:27

We had one in a cupboard in the office. It was a huge office, but it still stank. It will pass eventually unless you can find the little bastard.

shearwater2 · 23/01/2024 14:38

You could cover up the smell with a wax melt my mum bought that was supposed to be rose.

If an entire bunch of roses were dead, mixed with a lot of dead lilies, left out for compost and a colony of mice pissed on it for six months, that is.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Tisforptarmigan · 23/01/2024 17:18

We had this when our cat let a mouse escape. I knew where the dead body was but could not access it.

In the end I put fresh coffee grounds in bowls near the worst smelling part
Replaced them a few times and the smell eventually went as the body dried up.

Coffee idea is a great one thank you! Xx

We had a dead rat at work , we think it died on the heating pipes ,the smell was horrendous and we resorted to putting Vicks under our noses to try to cover the smell .

TheDoneInn · 23/01/2024 21:48

Start looking for bluebottles and you’ll find it

Pushkinini · 24/01/2024 07:21

We used to work in a really shitty office and rats regularly used to die in the roof. The smell was absolutely rank. Once a colleague sat on the loo and maggots started to drop through a hole in the ceiling onto their feet. Grim. Fortunately we moved to brand new premises soon after that.

littleblackcat27 · 24/01/2024 07:28

It might not be a mouse. We had a similar disgusting smell - and I mean BAD, Turned out it was the drip tray at the back of integrated fridge/freezer.

Gross mould growing!! It did involve my DH and grown up son undoing several screws and managing to get to back of fridge - not an easy task, but so glad we were able to find the source Envy

Rzim · 24/01/2024 08:49

Thank you we think it is coming from a pipe/tunnel from the outside into our larder so are currently DIYing!!! Seems much better already!
