Replacement vacuum suggest

Our current Dyson DC5 is about 25 years old but has just started making a loud noise and a concerning electrical smell so I think it’s finally given up and we need a replacement.

I know that motor sizes are smaller now than when we bought this one, ideally the new one wouldn’t be an upright. It needs to cope with parque floors, laminate and carpets/rugs. No pets to consider.

Any ideas what might fit the bill please?

We had exactly the same dilemma when our Dyson gave up the ghost. We bought a GTech, best decision ever!! It's brilliant on all floor surfaces and actually picks up more than the Dyson ever did.
We bought the handheld gtech too, I would highly recommend both

Thanks @twiddlingthumbs69

where did you get them from?

I have no idea what makes a £300 machine so much better than a £70 one!

@Muchtoomuchtodo if I remember rightly, Gtech had a deal on their website. You might be able to google though and see deals/money off coupons.
We managed to get the upright and handheld with all attachments for the price of the upright alone.

Just found this link for Argos for a bundle

Noseyoldcow · 19/01/2024 12:53

We have a Gtech upright and handheld and they're very good. But because I am a lazy cow and we have mainly hard floors with a few rugs, we also have a eufy robot vacuum.

I’ve always had cylinder vacuums. Aren’t upright ones really heavy to push around?

An initial search has shown me that I’d like a long lead length (ideally 10m), not too heavy (they seem to vary a lot), bagless cylinder model. I must be in the minority as there’s not many about - certainly not that I can get today which I’d like to do.

we have a Henry which ticks your boxes for cord length and good cleaning but I find it heavy enough and I’m not sure about parquet flooring

GildedAge · 19/01/2024 13:14

Uprights are much kinder on your back and easier to push around than the alternatives. I have a Seba I have had for 20 years and still going strong. Also very good at picking up and changing from one type of flooring to another.

I moved from a Dyson cylinder to a Shark and love it. The Dyson was just knackered after so long though. The shark has a detachable cylinder too so it's quite versatile. Also love the anti hair wrap bit!

Sebo owner here after many years of Dyson. Recommended by carpet shop after new carpets installation. Very good switching between different flooring types eg carpet lino etc

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/01/2024 14:14

I should have said, definitely not a Henry!

The shark looks really awkward to push around, I’m veering towards cordless but would need to sort out a plug in the cupboard where it’s stored.

off to look at Sebo now.

Miele

Robinonaspade · 19/01/2024 14:32

Sebo Felix , ours replaced a Dyson. It's great, picks up loads more than Dyson and we can use all our Dyson attachments with it too, with a small adapter.

Lonelycrab · 19/01/2024 14:35

Miele are excellent.

heldinadream · 19/01/2024 15:25

Another vote for Miele. Had various over the years, none of them satisfactory. Never had a Dyson. Used a Miele on a frequent house-sit and liked it so we've replaced with one this time. There's no perfect vac but it's probably the best I've had.
Had a Bosch last time and could never get the bastarding tools to come off. Not having that problem at least!

DogLover24 · 20/01/2024 12:19

Henry Quick - it's bloody amazing for a cordless vacuum! It lifts the carpet up the suction is so strong

DogLover24 · 20/01/2024 12:19

Also even though it requires pods, they last forever as it compacts the waste

PiersPlowman11 · 20/01/2024 12:38

Actually, Henry gets recommended by people in trades… it sucks, but in a good way.

I guess if the name bothers you OP you could always paint “Mercedes Benz” over it.

GildedAge · 20/01/2024 13:29

Henry is used in the building trade as it can cope with building dust in a way household vaccums cannot. I wouldn’t want to use it as the only vaccum in a large house though, would break your back.

SausageAndEggSandwich · 20/01/2024 13:44

Sebo. They are heavy though.
