Decorating DS aged 4.5 room. Should I go for a theme or not?

He is quite into space at the moment but, when I got home from B&Q armed with space themed samples, I realised that he actually has more road/travel toys in his room. He has a rug from IKEA with a road on it and this also has a castle on it which he is also into. He also likes dinosaurs and dragons, oh and being a rockstar. So picking a unifying theme might be a bit tricky.

I don't want to do any TV or Disney characters. He said he wants one wall to be erm, black .

Ideas anyone?

i would paint nice colours-plain. plain walls and plain curtains.
and then add detail with rmovable stickers or pictures that can be changed.

NO no no no no! Never the themed room! He'll go off ot quickly and it will be pricey and a pita. And no black either.

Do a theme that you can change - my DS loved Thomas when he was 4 and I put stickerarounds of Thomas on his wall. He is now 6 and asked me to take them down before his friends from school came round!!

He has dinosaur posters now and a big framed picture of a whale (his favourite thing) and a pinboard with his own drawings on it. Far more grown up at 6!!! I was a bit sad that at 6 he already didn't like Thomas, but also a leeeetle bit relieved that I didn't have to read the wretched books any more!

Sounds like a good idea. I have brought home various textured wallpaper that I thought would look nice painted and hide the bumpy walls.

Agree with tmmbunny. DS's room was all transport in our old house and this house (rented) we went with plain navy blinds and the walls are a greeny-brown colour (sounds horrible but it suits the house!). He has become football mad and we re-did his room last weekend - cheap football themed duvet cover and some posters and he is in heaven. When he wants to change it - it will be easy.

How about very dark navy blue and put those stars on it that glow? Just as a compromise?

sounds good.

we pained ds1's room a light orange with one wall a mid blue.
the blue wall we then covered in a top coat of clear glittery paint. we then put space stickers on the walls. he has plain blue carpet/curtains.looks great. he has a space duvet cover too.

Yes I like that idea TMMB the wall by his bed where he sleeps can have the blue paint with a shimmer over it and the rest can be another colour - to be decided. The carpet is a terracotta and cream fleck, and the walls are currently a light terracotta and he has cream blinds and curtains already so I guess I would have to go quite neutral on the remaining walls.

Also he likes to keep all his drawings and likes pictures on the wall, so I might just paint that wall a pale colour and that can be his picture/poster wall. Existing colour might be fine but I am just so fed up with lumpy walls and we can't afford to replaser right now - hence the textured wallpaper.

Ohhh never ever theme a child's room, the theme will be 'over' by the time you've done it.

I'd go for neutral walls, you could have a themed border (easy to remove/replace with next 'latest theme'.

I conceded to letting each of mine have one theme duvet of their choice of whatever was fashionable, meant it had to be continually washed and changed though!

Ds is 4.4 and has a blue room and takes great pleasure from having "a blue room" (rest of house is creams). He complained that the fireplace is not blue (its white). He's got mid-blue walls and a navy carpet, white ceiling and wood and cream blind. Without all his toys and the bedding you'd never guess it was a kiddies' room, so I hope it will last.

Have (reluctantly) opted for a space wallpaper which is essentially blue with a couple of small planets on it on the alcove wall by his bed. The rest will be painted in a colour to match the planets, and this will also match the carpet luckily. It's only 6ft of wall so this can easily be changed if we need to - but I think planets can last for quite a while though.
