Talk to me about tog ratings

Nothing to do with Rhod Gilbert’s comedy sketch!

I have a 15 tog duvet in winter, but there are times when I’d like to be warmer. If I were to put, say, a 5 tog duvet in the same duvet cover as my 15 tog duvet, does that make it 20 tog, or does tog ratings not work like that?

I’ve never seen a duvet with a tog rating above 15, but is that because a) it’s not possible or b) because manufacturers don’t think there is a market for duvets of higher than 15 tog?

What about really cold countries, like Canada or Scandinavian countries, what is their highest tog duvet? (Assuming they use duvets there, they might prefer sheets and blankets)

Yes, tog ratings are cumulative. 15+5 would give you a 20tog quilt. But it would be very heavy.

If you don't want to use an electric underblanket, how about putting a quilt under your sheet? Lying on a quilt makes a surprising difference. Or can you get a feather and down mattress topper?

I was going to suggest a duvet under will make a bigger difference than one on top - that's how sleeping bags work.

In Scandinavia they have much better houses and much better heating, so they don’t need super thick duvets! I have lived in countries colder than the U.K., but have never been as cold as living here.

i have a thick velvet quilt on top of my duvet. I does feel a bit heavy but I quite like that.

Ooh, a duvet underneath the sheet sounds lovely and squishy to lay on.
