Realised today I don't actually know how to clean.

Basically my method of cleaning is to spray with antibac and wipe with a cloth and if that doesn't work I don't know what to do.

I lived in a new build for years and that seemed to be enough but now I live in quite an old house that seems to get dusty very easily and my old methods are no longer working.

I fell down a total you tube hole last night watching people clean various areas of their home and I really enjoyed it. So I'm planning on 'teaching' myself how to properly clean one room a week until I know what I'm doing.

This thread is just basically me asking for all your you tube/instagram recommendations or just any tips that you might have - please throw them all this way!

I use cheap disposable dish cloths (J cloths) for kitchen work tops. Every other day I take this cloth in to the bathroom and use it with hot water and bleach to clean the toilet. It's then thrown in the bin.

I know this is landfill. I know it's wasteful. I just can't bring myself to reuse dishcloths and it stops another cloth being binned because I can't bring myself to reuse a toilet cloth!

All my other cleaning and dusting is done with cloths I wash.

Bleach should actually be used with cold water. Hot water renders it ineffective.

If you read the small print on most antibacterial sprays it says to get full affect of them getting rid of 99.9 of germs leave the spray on for 5 mins before wiping off

Mrs sunshine, you are correct, most say at least 3 minutes. I see a lot of posters saying using damp cloth, soapy water for the TV screen, ours is OLED, you only use dry duster!

Get a cleaner. They usually know how to clean. I've had cleaners in the past but haven't got one at the moment. It's such a pointless exercise. Just goes back to not clean in a short time. If it bothers you try the organised mum method or a book that's quite good for tips is Lynsey Crombie how to clean your house and tidy up your life.

For general house cleaning I wipe every dust catching surface with a dry microfibre cloth, then white vinegar spray and use another microfibre cloth to wipe any shiny surfaces, mirrors, tv and glass. Husband hoovers and mops when this is done.

For the kitchen I just use dish soap and hot water on the cupboard doors. Surfaces get our Smol all purpose spray and hot water. Bathroom cleaning is similar though I do use bleach in the toilet.

Taps and tight spaces are scrubbed with an old toothbrush. We keep a few under the sink and one in the shower.

At the end of cleaning, the microfibre cloths are chucked in the washing machine.

For cleaning the shower door I use a tip I read on here a while ago.

You fill a soap dispenser dishwashing brush with washing-up liquid and vinegar. I keep it in the shower so I can use it when I'm having a shower. It's very effective in my soft water area. I don't know about hard water areas though.

Get a cleaner!! My ex H had his own cleaning company, the only people who did a proper job Were him,me, and our children!!! My youngest worked for one of the big chain hotels, they weren't given long enough times to properly clean rooms, cups were wiped out! Bathrooms eventually cleaned by spraying undiluted bleach around, she stuck it 3 months!!
