Are there rug washing companies in UK/ London - like you see on Facebook and IG? Anyone had the experience of sending a rug away for a wash??

I'm really desperate to have my old rug washed - but I don't want to use a machine or a company that comes and washes it with a machine. Its really grottty and it needs a proper thorough wash to get out dirt and fluff up the fibres.

I keep coming across videos on Facebook or Instagram where there are companies that take the rug, wash it ib a sort of a car wash for rugs with a lot of water and detergent and then dry it in a special machine - but they all seem to be in the US or even Turkey and I cant find anything in London? I don't want to throw the rug away as its pure wool and is about 100 years old, it was my great-grandma's - but I cant use it as its dirty and its smells, its currently in the cupboard taking up space and annoying me. Any help and experience would be super appreciated!

I know there's one in wales that pick up from all over the uk, the rug laundry company I think it's called.
I follow them on instagram as I find it fascinating watching them wash them 😊
Never used them though so I can't vouch for them

@Daisypod i know, those videos are cool. My rug will be a good subject for one of them 😂

Wales, seems quite far away! I'm surprised I can't find any in London...

They pick up and deliver back

Alternatively, the traditional way to properly clean antique rugs is to wait for first snowfall and to beat them out face down in it. Been there, done that, works a treat. Don't leave it in a cupboard, the moths will get it! It needs to be out in the open and walked on.

i'd be pretty cautious in case the company damaged the rug. the pressure washer effects you see on FB would damage a 100 year old rug. maybe look up rug restoration?

@Saweetie thanks, will have a look!

@GrumpyPanda yes, I do have a childhood memory - sounds of carpets being whacked and dusty squares on the snow in the yard)))

It's old, but it's not really "antique", I don't think it has much value beyond sentimental. It's got so dirty it's almost like felt, so probs needs a good pressure wash...

We waited for a sunny day then placed our rug on a piece of plastic sheeting outside and then blasted it with our pressure washer and then our Vax machine.

yes, i've used Rug Spa - you get a quote, they pick up clean it and drop it back off, really pleased with the service and the rug (which had been rolled up for 2 years while we moved and redecorated and smelled very doggy) is beautiful again - cost about £115 so not cheap, but definitely cheaper than buying a new rug

I just stumbled on this thread.

OP if you haven’t got round to cleaning yet, when I lived in company I used this company. It’s actually a very small company. It was an older gentleman who rocked up in a small car, folded up very large rug into his small car, took it away and hand washed it. He’d bring it back a few weeks later. I had it done every couple of years and it was always an amazing transformation! I think it cost around £200, but as I say it was a large rug (large sitting room size).
