So I have just washed my Dyson filter for the first time in 5, maybe 6 years....

will I notice a difference or is it just too far gone?
What difference does it make anyway?
Am I a minger?

OK I've now read the link, I can do that!

VanillaPumpkin · 12/03/2008 19:58

No, your post was a very accurate portrayal of why I haven't done it for so long .

ooh dh and i cleaned my 1 year old dyson.
we took everything off it that can be removed.i too had a filter that was brick solid. i took the cylinder apart too and used a brush to clean out the roller.also dunked the hose in warm soapy water. dried it all out in the airing cupboard overnight.

result: super suction and fab cleaning again.its ike having a new vacuum.

VanillaPumpkin · 12/03/2008 20:02

Lol, DH has been banging it on a wall. It is still black. Perhaps we should splash out for a service? Can I buy new filters? Off to investigate....

Can buy the top filter but not the bottom one. There is a freephone number though so I am going to call them in the morning.

Promise I am not trawling MN for all Dyson mentions.

Call the call centre if you're stuck on anything, generally fab.

Hello CamillaDyson . Did you note on the other thread that I am VERY happy to swap this machine for you should you need to compare the new with the older model ?? Particularly if you want to know how well they survive despite a complete lack of any tlc .

I forgot I was going to call them today...My filter is nearly dry so I am going to stick it back in and hope for amazing results. It actually still does a great job tbh. The only reason I want a new one is because it is so heavy . It does my back in lugging it up the stairs, and I have lost my brush attachment.
DH has reminded me that we had the Dyson engineer out in 2006 to replace the flex . I think I am too embarrassed to call one out now so perhaps I will just call the helpline and see what advice they can offer me...The black bit is concerning me a bit.

just bought a dyson20 and it's very bling - gold and silver. took me ages to sort out where everything goes, am v impressed, much more compact than old dc05 from years gone by

wash the filter every 6 months, makes a big difference

oh freaky, I have done this today for the first time in my dyson's 3 year life, hoping it will get rid of weirdy smell.

VanillaPumpkin · 13/03/2008 19:19

. She found me already. I sadly don't think my desperate begging suggestion of a swap will appeal.

I am loving the fact that no-one is shocked by my slovenly-ness and people are confessing their filter sins too. I don't think my 6 years can be topped though....

'filter nazi', that's a new one! Thanks Cod.

Have to say I am impressed amazed that your machine has survived no filter wash for 6 years! The filter protects your motor when you overfill the bin, so good job that it's still working.

I am not allowed to give out any more machines, sorry. Although I did agree with MN to run a competition soon to win one of the new light machines...

VanillaPumpkin · 14/03/2008 12:42

Blimey. I didn't know it was that serious .

I am only being cheeky about suggesting a swap of course I didn't seriously expect a freebie, but I appreciate you being so polite and not telling me to bugger off . I will be looking out for the competition even though mine is obviously a quality machine having survived my mistreatment.....

I have to say that the improved suction today was actually noticeable, and I thought it was good before. I could tell this as the rug I usually whip over before lifting to hoover under was picked up by the machine at one point. It also felt heavier, but this could be because I have given the whole house a good going over with my improved suction machine.

So ladies WASH YOUR FILTER!!!

Have to say a big thanks for this thread. Have had our dyson for over 18 months and didn't know we had to wash a filter

It was bleurgh. But it dried out yesterday and I can't wait to try it out today. Tragic!

Thank you!
