How to get spattered mud out of clothes

I've put a wash on and may as well not have bothered as all the mud has stayed firmly put! I used ordinary bio liquid at 20C with a spoonful of Oxy stain removal powder. What can I do next to try and restore them? It's a mix of cotton hoodies and that slightly shiny, quick-drying sports fabric (no fancy brands though). Thanks

Water needs to be hotter. At least 40

It's a waste of time washing things at 20 degrees to be honest, unless the wash is 3+ hours long, it won't shift stains.

You can't use a cold wash on soiled clothes. It needs to be at least 40.

Wash at the appropriate temperature, problem solved, no extra chemicals required.

Long cotton wash, persil bio, 40 degrees.
ds is usually covered in mud daily from forest nursery, every washes out fine

newyorkbreakfast · 19/11/2023 17:29

Thank you all. @Caspianberg how long is your "long cotton wash" cycle?

I've got horses, mud in clothes is an inevitable part of daily life in winter for me.
40 degree wash should do it, bio powder is my preference over non bio.
If it's orange or yellow mud, it might be harder to shift and take a bit of soaking as well.

Caspianberg · 19/11/2023 17:33

@newyorkbreakfast - I think it’s almost 3hrs for a full 9kg load ( so it will adjust to quicker if I only put 5kg for example, maybe 2hrs). But either way it gets all
mud out on 40 long cycle, and 2 years of baby washable nappies washed at 60 on long cycle ( they look as new after literally being pooped in daily )

isthismylifenow · 19/11/2023 17:33

20 degrees is basically a cold wash. Perfectly fine for refreshing clothes, but mud needs a bit more.

Either treat the stains and leave them overnight, or trying again on a hotter wash.

Vanish gold liquid, directly on the stain watch it puff up and eat it. Extra splash in the prewash drawer, bio liquid detergent and at least a 40 wash. Teatowels etc get a 60

SgtJuneAckland · 19/11/2023 17:35

Don't eat the vanish! I meant watch the vanish eat the stain....

Roselilly36 · 19/11/2023 17:37

Soak in salted water to draw out stains, then wash with detergent and add Napisan, marvellous stuff to remove stains.

newyorkbreakfast · 19/11/2023 17:46

@SgtJuneAckland ha ha that made me laugh! @

@Roselilly36 I'd forgotten about Napisan. Thank you

I swear by a bicarbonate of soda soak before washing at 40. Seems to get everything out of muddy, dirty football kits.

newyorkbreakfast · 19/11/2023 20:45

Great tips everyone, especially the eco- friendly bicarbonate of soda.
