House without Porch - can't place doormat

We recently renovated our house. We don't have a porch area, we have a very narrow hallway were we have placed a small shoe rack. Couple steps after the shoe rack is the living room and lounge. The frustrating problem is this:Due to some miscalculation by the builders, we have less than a centimeter gap between the bottom of the front door and the floor. So we can't place any door mat. We do have a rough mat outside the house. We have a dog. On wet/muddy days, our shoes and our dog's paws all get really muddy and you can imagine the hall way looks really nasty. I make it a point to rub the floor every time someone come in from outside, I wish there is something we can do about it. Any ideas please

We had a built in doormat in one house. Would that work?

BaronessBomburst · 14/11/2023 14:07

What's currently on your hall floor? Carpet, tiles, laminate?

Geneticsbunny · 14/11/2023 14:18

Turtle mats? They are really thin but extremely absorbent

MrsFawkes · 14/11/2023 14:24

Just put down an old sheet/dust sheet on wet/muddy days and grit your teeth.

Is it possible to dig out the floor (use a professional) to insert a coir mat or similar?

Can you have a house rule that on wet or muddy dog days the back door is used? Just keep the front good locked & shriek “go ‘round the back” if anyone tries the front! 😆

Could you retract the current flooring and build in the door mat?

ApolloandDaphne · 14/11/2023 14:36

I have very flat door mats. You can get them anywhere.

LIZS · 14/11/2023 14:44

Get a non bristly rubber backed one , most supermarkets sell them. You can use special fixing tape if it feels slippery.

narniabusiness · 14/11/2023 14:47

I second a turtle mat inside, and an all rubber textured one or metal grate style one outside to get the mud off. Turtle mats are great at absorbing the wet. Ours gets filthy but you can bung them in the washing machine.

If you have an hardware shops nearby take a look for rolls of this sponge like material that they will cut off how much you need. I am not sure what its actual purpose is for but I have it inside the backdoor and around the sink in the down stairs loo that has a tap that sprays. It absorbs a lot. Is about as thick as two sheets on top of each other and washes easily in the washing machines and dries almost instantly

Why not? It will be higher than the bottom of the door? That's ok surely if you need a mat.

LIZS · 14/11/2023 17:44

@noisyfrodge I assume the door might catch on it

Somewhatchallenging · 14/11/2023 17:50

My doormats aren’t anywhere near a centimetre high.

Oh haha I didn't even think of this Blush

ComfortFoodCorner · 22/11/2023 19:31

Thank you so for the replies. I can't even place turtle mat. Attached a pic of the door. The floor is tiled with underfloor heating. So don't think inbuilt mat is an option.
