Dehumidifier or heated airer?

I'm looking to buy either a dehumidifier or a heated airer because I'm sick of my clothes smelling of damp.
Which do you recommend please? Which works better to dry clothes quickly and properly?
I'm swaying towards a dehumidifier because DDs room is damp so it would help with that too, but from what I've seen a heated airer is cheaper than a good dehumidifier.

Anyone?

A dehumidifier removes water from the air as it dries washing. A heated airer transfers the water from the washing to the air in your house, so you need to ventilate the room to get rid of the water. If you already have a damp problem then you the dehumidifier will help, the heated airer won’t.

Dehumidifier. We had a heated airer and it caused damp! Bought the dehumidifier and not had any problems since, plus washing dries a bit faster too :)

Dehumidifier if your house is reasonably warm. Something has to make the water evaporate (in my mind) and then the dehumidifier gets rid of that water in the air.

My house is quite cool actually, would this make a difference?

Dehumidifiers give out heat. We use ours in an unheated room and it warms it up significantly. It produces a stream of warm air that is directed at the washing.

A desiccant dehumidifier will also heat the air - we use them to heat our bedrooms (and keep the air dry) rather than putting the central heating on.

Not all dehumidifiers heat the air so you need to research which ones do.

Houseplanter · 14/11/2023 13:37

Ours blows out air but it only feels vaguely warm once the air is dry.

If your house already feels damp then defo a dehumidifier. It’s amazing how much water they suck up and they are cheap to run because they are not creating heat, which is the expensive part. Clothes do dry properly too.

Chemenger · 14/11/2023 13:47

It will give out heat in proportion to the rate at which the water is being collected (effectively it’s the heat given out when the water vapour condenses, more or less) if no water is being collected from dry air then no heat is produced.

i should have specified that desiccant dehumidifiers give out heat, refrigerant ones don’t. I assume most domestic dehumidifiers are desiccant ones, I’ve only ever had those.

I would be absolutely lost without my dehumidifier in this weather. I bout an Ecoair five yrs ago and it's been fantastic. I bought a Meaco a few weeks ago for downstairs. The Meaco takes incredible amounts of water out of the air. Really worth the money.

mynewusername2023 · 14/11/2023 13:50

We love our dehumidifier. It dries the clothes very well and does put out from warm air so double duty.

The amount of water it collects is shocking. Before that water would have gone into the air and the house.

We have both a heated airer and a dehumidifier that we use together. The heated airer is useless by itself and it needs to be in a well ventilated spot or the bottom rungs don't dry. I do like it for small loads and warming through. If you were to get just one I'd choose the dehumidifier. Our Meaco is fantastic.

TrishTrix · 16/11/2023 14:58

I've got a dehumidifier. Love it. And I barely use the heating as it keeps my (small) flat a good temperature. I have it on all the time at the lowest setting.

BorgQueen · 16/11/2023 15:11

A single fitted sheet over a heated airer keeps the heat in and dries stuff faster😉
DD uses both airer and dehumidifier
I use a non heated x wing airer against a big radiator and a dehumidifier.
I also put a fan up high sometimes pointing down at bedding etc. to direct the warmest air.
