Any recommendations for a peppermill?

Don't need anything pretty or showy. It's just for me and will mainly live in the kitchen but would like it to be easy to use.

Peugeot make excellent salt and pepper mills. Not the cheapest but they're good and last well.

Inextremis · 12/11/2023 15:57

I've got a couple of OXO Good Grips mills (one for black, one for white pepper) - and they work, which is all I ask of a grinder, really. Amazon.

Came on to say this. Although DH goes through a peppermill every 2 years! Now on our second Peugeot. This one has a torch on the bottom for some reason!

A Brass Turkish mill. I've had the same one for going on 15 years and it is brilliant and hasn't lost its "crunch", presumably as the whole thing is made of metal, including it's working parts

snowgal · 12/11/2023 16:17

Our last Peugeot pepper mill lasted over 15 years. It got dropped at some point and now the grinding mechanism just can't be fixed 😕. I'm on the lookout for my next one, but I'm very fussy - following for interest 😊

KittytheHare · 12/11/2023 16:20

Came on to recommend the Peugeot brand. I got a really nice one on Amazon recently for about €36

we have just bought these after the last ones broke (which were not cheap 😠)
too soon to comment on their lifespan, but they have the advantage that you turn them upside down to use them so you don't get salt/pepper on the table

That's weird. Do you use the torch?

It comes on automatically! Tbh, I picked the most durable one I could find and I think it’s designed for camping etc. it doesn’t have a coarseness setting so it’s a bit fine - wouldn’t recommend if you’re a big pepper fan. Our last one was perfect.

How strange. Like you, the only reason I can imagine for the torch is if you're camping.

They certainly do.

Cars are crap though.

lost78300 · 12/11/2023 17:48

I bought one from IKea years ago and it's always been great. You can adjust the grind.

SiobhanSharpe · 12/11/2023 17:53

My Peugeot peppermill is really not very good. The little screw/knob on the top always flies off in use when you grind it over your dish or bowl. Always.
I'm fed up with scrabbling on the floor to find it and pick it up's

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 12/11/2023 18:56

Second the ikea recommendations... we have several of their basic glass ones for rocket, pepper, chilli etc ... cheap and durable.

For 'big' pepper we have a Zassenhaus mill, which has ceramic grinding parts, and it's very good indeed. We got it about 20 years ago and it's still going strong.

This is ours! Also had for 20 odd years together with matching nutmeg grinder. Shows no signs of dulling and if it broke I'd get another despite the cost. It's really really good.

First of all VERY INPORTANT
Take yours and DH's credit card put them in a plastics bag submerged bag on large container of water put the lot in your freezer.

Then in 2 days open this thread it has some great ideas , but some eye watering expensive!

What are you favourite high quality but practical things? My husband doesn’t need or want anything, but he loves and gets great joy out of using well...

Trudeau are great. I actually use the salt one for pepper. I have arthritis in my hands and wrists so this is great- just turn it upside down ani works automatically. Have been using this brand for about 20 years now and can't recommend highly enough.

NotMyFIrstTIme · 15/11/2023 13:22

I've got these (purchased from ebay so I didn't pay that much for them)

I like that you turn them upside down to use, so the inevitable bits don't end up all over your worktop or table. The grind adjuster is OK. Not wonderful but OK.

I’m sure everyone else knows this but I have only just realised that these are refillable. The whole top unscrews. I’m not sure how long the grinding part lasts for but it must be better than throwing them out when empty.

bilbodog · 15/11/2023 17:44

@Chemenger

Ive found they last about a couple of years.
