Is there a cleaning machine that works on both rugs and furniture/upholstery? If so, can you recommend one?

Just that! I want to clean my rug and sofa (only have one sofa and rest of house is hard floors) - pretty grubby I think, so spot cleaning isn't going to be good enough.

Is a vax machine good? I did once buy a bissell one but it just made my (velvet) sofa go crusty. Thanks!

Bissell Spot cleaners do upholstery and rugs. However, as to the crusty velvet…

Velvet upholstery fabrics have different cleaning codes. Some of them have an S code, which means that the material suits solvent-based cleaners. Other velvets are code W, which indicates that they prefer water-based cleaners

I got a vax . I used it once and it ruined my carpet and left it dirty. I wouldn’t recommend it at all. Hugely complicated and not user friendly.

ok, so back to the drawing board. What's a water based cleaner?

I have a bissell but it didn't do much!

What's your budget?

I have a Karcher Puzzi 10/1 and it's brilliant. It does carpets, upholstery, and you can get a solid floor attachment for it too. It can be used with hot water only, or with detergent.

You can get a refurbished one from time to time from their outlet centre at a massive saving (I found out about the outlet centre as I got spares from there).

I have a vax but it's the older style , a tub pull along rather than a upright. It's a very powerful vacuum and shampooer and has a big tank but it's a cumbersome bugger.

I also recommend the karcher pp mentioned , HSS hire them out for a reasonable price, the only downside is the tanks are small and ( both ) are hard to use on stairs.

I don't have a budget, but if it's too expensive, it's going to be more cost effective to get someone in to clean my sofa and rug I think.

I'll look at the Karcher (and hiring options) (plus point for hard floor attachment! - although my floors are painted and that limits the ways I can clean the floors without taking the paint off).
