We live in an old tenement building/flat. Reluctant to put the heating on as it's too expensive. We have a dehumidifier and opened the windows, but it doesn't seem to be the working. Trying to prevent mould!

You will need to heat enough to increase the temperature of the windows and walls. Airflow and warmth work together, even if you only keep it on for an hour in the morning and evening to adjust thr moisture balance.

Some houseplants can help reduce humidity.

Wiping windows is easy enough each morning but you need to.avoid walls getting damp enough for mould.

Are your windows single glazed and wooden? If so. this will be an ongoing problem during the winter- especially in bedrooms, bathroom and kitchens.
Some tips-
*when making steam - make sure the room is ventilated by opening windows for a short period afterwards ( kitchen / bathroom)

  • keep a window cleaning blade handy and an absorbent hand towel- have found this useful in the morning to ‘ swipe and soak’ up water condensation on windows
  • could try the water absorbing crystals in containers on window sills
  • you can get the stick on thin film that you can put on to be a temp secondary glazing- this can be tricky to apply and does leave a sticky residue around the edges
  • another option that does require some handy skills and some initial cost - you can magnetically stick on Perspex sheets to make a secondary glaze. I have done this for the single glass panel on my wooden front door and has worked a treat. Not used this company but found this on a search, there are some you tube videos if you search ‘ magnetic secondary glazing’ https://www.theplasticpeople.co.uk/plastic-types/acrylic-(perspex)/extreme-magnetic-secondary-glazing-kit/?wbraid=Ck0KCAjw-pyqBhAwEj0AWO4Asj35IeYzRZYAvkz5s8qoO_MCt1gyLYPqibyb-gpZktdxMoSOiALVjVfjtWTProaeoHwTsD23blGcGgKWrA
  • in the summer when everything is dry, it is worth making sure the internal frame gloss is still glossy - if not e.g has become dry/ Matt/ flaky it is worth repainting to stop any moisture soaking into wooden frames and also make it easier to wipe off.
  • regularly spray and treat with the bathroom bleach spray stuff to keep on top of the black stuff…

thats all I can think of for the moment.
Hope that helps

Also agree with other poster- do need to keep a certain warmth in the body of the property.

Karcher window vac. Couldn’t live without mine. Makes short work of all the windows and bathroom surfaces.

Ive used this company and the difference it’s made to condensation and drafts, has been amazing. I used to have to wipe the windows every morning with a towel, plus the room was so cold and drafty. I wish I’d done it years ago.

Glazed windows, not wooden, I've just found a temporary solution. We have a karcher, which seems to be working okish

You need to run a dehumidifier OR open the windows. You can't do both at once.
FWIW I run my desiccant dehumidifier as we are getting up in the morning and the windows are clear in around 20-30 minutes.
