Keeping toys for possible future grandchildren

What are your opinions on this.

We've been slowly decluttering over the year after h finding ourselves with a house full of 'stuff'.

We've done really well, sold loads and made a few hundred pounds.

We sorted out our loft at New Year, it was completely ridiculous. Did really well and got rid of so much. Decided to keep a few classic toys incase we have have dgc.

Things like Lego Duplo, Happyland Farm, dinosaurs, a toy kitchen, shopping trolley.

The truth is though that eldest is only a teen so realistically we are years off if ever having grandchildren. So are we being silly keeping these things for years and years?

Having another sort through ahead of Christmas so should make a decision.

I think keeping good quality toys which will withstand a few years in storage is a good idea. My mum has just dug out old Playmobil for my children.

Although my children are very young there are a couple of toys I will keep hold of, even just for sentimental reasons

WeightoftheWorld · 05/11/2023 22:10

I think if you've got the space, keep them! I had DC1 at 24 (which was a shock to my DPs!). I think it's lovely that they kept some of our old baby things and toys and we've been reusing them with our kids e.g. play pen, bouncy chair, sensory board, train track etc.

Nicesalad · 05/11/2023 22:15

Even if you never have grandchildren You might have other young visitors.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 05/11/2023 22:17

My parents kept quite a lot and it's so nice seeing my Nieces playing with my old my little ponies and reading my old books and my baby son will enjoy lots of the toys they kept too and is currently sleeping in my old cot!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/11/2023 22:53

We gave a lot away, but I have a black bag full of old Lego.

Remy7 · 05/11/2023 23:01

My mum kept a few sets of toys (duplo, playmobil). I've now got our childhood duplo for my boys and I'm so glad she kept them :)

user1497207191 · 05/11/2023 23:09

We’ve kept only the good stuff, I.e. complete boxed Lego sets and a huge trunk of brio trains/track. All packed and stored in a safe/dry place. Everything else has been given away or sold.

YokoOnosBigHat · 05/11/2023 23:28

My mum kept all our Duplo- we had loads and all the little people and bits to make houses with doors etc. she kept it for future grandchildren and I'm so glad she did:
My kids have had so much fun with it. And I'll keep it now for my grandchildren.

MIL kept all of DH's baby toys/books/games/soft toys from the late 70s and brought them out when DCs were toddlers. A lot of the plastics actually stank after 40 years. There was a jack in the box that was creepy looking and made the most ghastly noise. A sausage dog on wheels with a pull string was a hazard. The books were dated/unsuitable for children today. We had to bin the lot and I felt to guilty doing it.

Crispynoodle · 05/11/2023 23:40

Having 2 DGS I've developed a shocking play Mobil habit.....

SisterMichaelsHabit · 05/11/2023 23:46

As a different view, my ILs kept most of DH's toys and have passed them down. Our kids absolutely love getting them because they're new to them. We have Duplo from the late 70s/early 80s, Transformers, all sorts. It's fab. I wish my family had done the same.
However I wasn't too thrilled with getting a big pile of DH's mildew-y baby clothes when I first became a mother. So maybe only keep the good stuff. ;)

SpotTheCat · 05/11/2023 23:53

My daughter and her cousins loved playing with the playmobil at grannys. And so glad she kept the box of sindy and barbie clothes too. No idea she kept them!

LoreleiG · 06/11/2023 00:04

My DM kept most of our toys, and it’s been lovely to relive them all through our kids. It includes some real classics like vintage Fisher Price and Duplo, my My Little Ponies and DB’s Star Wars figures. I also have some of both hers and my Gran’s doll’s house furniture. I have kept the highlights of my kids’ toys too including a million Octonauts and the wooden railway so I may need to rent storage space soon. Or open a museum!

Omg I remember that jack in the box, if it was the same one. Very creepy…

I remember the dog! Every single toddler when mine were that age, had one!

I do know the jack in the box too. I don't think we had one, but lots of people did. It didn't seem creepy at the time, but I can see how it would now!

ETA that the dog has been brought back as a classic!

We had ‘the dog’ too @saraclara 😂 Or maybe I just played with it at a playgroup. There are a few absolute classics I thought I had that might have been just generally around places we went, like the Fisher Price record player and phone.

LoreleiG · 06/11/2023 00:24

That’s the one! I might have to acquire one for myself my grandkids 😉

Is there a single child born in the '80s who didn't have the chatterphone?!

The cassette player was amazing. Must have been the toughest 'toy' ever invented. They got tossed around and dropped constantly, and continued to work perfectly. Not a chance of finding anything like that now. Also it was brown. Brown! No-one would make a pre-school toy in brown these days.

And the garage...

FrostieBoabby · 06/11/2023 00:27

I would keep some if you have the space, there's something really special about seeing grand children and great nieces/nephews playing with your kids toys 30 years later. Doesn't half make you think of the passing of time though.

Edited

The garage was the absolute best. The lift!

Keep toys that will stand the test of time if you can. We did and our now 3yo GD is delighted as from time to time we produce something new, eg the brio train set came out recently and she loves it. Her favourite toys currently are DD’s old play kitchen and a fab buggy, rocking cradle and high chair for her doll. Everything stays here so no issue with the first to have a child getting everything (they have no space anyway) and when we look after her which we do regularly she has lots to keep her amused. Looking forward to bringing out all the Lego and playmobil we kept as she gets bigger.

HaplessRhombus · 06/11/2023 00:47

We have a toddler and my mother in law kept my husband's Duplo and Brio train set. We really appreciate it, it's saved us a fortune!

Peachy2005 · 06/11/2023 01:09

Keep a few bits but church fetes are great both for clearing out and then to rebuy bulky things like play kitchens, FP garages etc, if you find you want them at a later date.

Ishouldgodostuff · 06/11/2023 02:38

I think its best to pass them on when you are still in the midst of having friends with younger children, contacts etc who will love them too.

We thought as well we'd have lots of GC & nearby too so we kept all the marbles, the classic story books, the Lego & Duplo plus our boys had large-ish toy tractors & various trailer bits (John Deere brand here in NZ) - & now 30 odd years on I wish that we had passed them all on to other young families to love.

We have 1 dear wee GD, but she is far away from us & the other DS here unlikely to have any kids (the way its looking now :) )

Saschka · 06/11/2023 02:43

DS loves going to his gran’s house and playing with my old Fabuland Lego, connect 4, and other toys. He has some of DH’s matchbox cars as well.

You don’t need to keep everything, but future grandchildren will probably play with whatever you keep.
