Does anyone have any tips that they would like to share? I thought that it might be good to find alternatives for when you run out of cleaning fluids. Here's mine:

To get rid of the smell of vomit, mix some bicarb of soda with water and dab on affected area.

Use some vinegar water to get rid of smears on windows.

I mix 1 part vinegar to 8 parts water in a spray bottle next to the hob, as soon as I'm done cooking I give it a few sprays and wipe it down, no mess to clean later and only do a decent clean once a week with a mix of soda crystals and water in a spray bottle (I also use this to clean really greasy trays)

Use neat vinegar on the ends of taps to get rid of limescale buildup. Also can use it to clean mirrors.

If you cooked fish in a pan and you want to get rid of the smell, as soon as you've done cooking rinse with hot water, squirt lemon juice (cheap stuff) or rub half a lemon over the pan and then wash as usual. I found my non-stick pans tend to cling to food smells.

White vinegar and bicarb in a foil-lined container is a good silver cleaner.

I know this is a dumb question but what is the difference between bicarb of soda and soda crystals. where do you get the bicarb for cleaning - I've only seen small pots for baking - I guess it is the same stuff so you could use that?

I put some white vinegar in the kettle, steriliser etc and boil the water a couple of times - descales very well, better than chemical ones.

What sort of vinegar are you all talking about - fine wine vinegar, sarsons chip stuff, ......?

barbamama · 09/03/2008 23:09

I just use bog standard cheapo white vinegar

My mum used to use vinegar to clean glass - it stinks. I have used bicarb of soda to clean tiles in the bathroom.

Its distilled white vinegar, usually in one liter bottles in the pickle isles. You can buy a box of Bicarb, look in the ecofriendly section of the laundry isles.

soda-crystals use

Baking soda

I use white vinegar a lot to get rid of liemscale as we live in a very hard water area. I also use bicarbonate and vinegar for cleaning the sink - it does a good job.
