Oil Stain - Dark Clothing

Hi all,

After some advice after trying all options i can think of.

When away on holiday i managed to get some sort of grease on a t-shirt from a gate near where we were staying. Assuming it was some sort of deterrent as it was near shops etc.. This resulted in some thick brown grease that went everywhere i touched!

The t-shirt is a washed black colour and has print on the front and back. My fear is with as many washes it has had i’ve ‘set’ whatever it is into the fabric (that and leaving it a few days until i was home to sort it out!)

What i’ve tried -

Washed with Stardrops all purpose cleaner + Vanish oxy action / generic washing liquid x2 - this seemed to take all the grease off but left an oily stain on the top.

Dry cleaners - They attempted a soft brush with some dish soap as a grease remover + some sort of stain remover spray.

All attempts still resulted in marks left in the places it had gotten with what looks like wet patches - because of the colour, when the top is wet straight out of the washer it looks perfect!

Annoyingly my black shorts what also suffered are absolutely fine but they’re fully black so you probably can’t tell it’s left anything behind!

I’m desperate to get it looking okay again - It was expensive, i can’t get another and i even had it tailored to make it shorter.

Even if it means putting something on it to make it all darker and match, if i could wear it wet i could 😮

Attached a picture of the worst part.

Any help would be appreciated!

I think I would use fairy washing up liquid. It’s great at getting oil marks out of clothes. Dab neat onto the stain (maybe
work it into the fabric a little) and wash as normal 👍🏻

Or dye it black with washing machine dylon. That’s worked well before on my faded jeans.

What was the greaseproof paper/iron trick someone used before?

Rub soap into the stain maybe before rewashing

henrysugar12 · 24/10/2023 18:01

Wd40 can be used to remove oil stains.

floofbag · 24/10/2023 18:05

Is it velvet ? I can't see from the pic very well .

Try ironing it with lots of kitchen roll over and under it.
Then try rubbing fairy liquid into it.

DollyParsons · 24/10/2023 18:18

Try mixing washing up liquid and bicarbonate of soda into a thick-ish paste. Cover the stain with it and leave for 30-60 mins, then machine wash. Good luck 🤞

I had similar with an oily stain recently and Dr Beckmann’s stain devils sorted it right out, after I’d washed it umpteen times trying other things. I used the one for cooking oils and fats but they do one for grease and lubricants which may be more appropriate.

Baby powder or chalk - might be too late as it has been washed.

Grease proof paper and a warm iron

Thanks everyone for the replies, will give a few a try as i have most at home. Not much to lose now!

It’s just a thick cotton t-shirt (probably has some poly in it no doubt!).

Didn’t think of using Elbow grease, i have some in the cupboard so will give it a try.

Thanks for the suggestion of Dr Beckmann’s - have ordered both versions so will try both in different places and see the results!

Will keep updated :)

Just to give an update, i gave a few things a try and the final one was the Dr. Beckmann Stain Devils Grease, Lubricant & Paint as suggested by @OurfriendsintheNE

Left it to soak, gave it a wash and it has come out! (did it twice).

Big thanks for the suggestions, i’d become annoyed at myself for it happening and the fact i couldn’t buy another, now it’s all good 😄
