White school shirts!!

Please give me the secret to keeping white kids school shirts white. 6 weeks in and ours look years old. Using washing powder, and a 30 degree wash, do i need to go hotter? Use a specific whitner? They wear a clean one each day so they do take a battering. Any tips?

I use Vanish for whites. Soak for an hour and wash but recently realized supermarkets do own brand of whitening products but yet to try them

DC is allergic to bio washing powders. So I either do a quick wash or a pre wash with vanish whitener, then a quick wash at 60 with non bio.
Still doesn't shift the biro stains from shoving them in a blazer pocket instead of pencil case though!. 🙄

Hang them outside in the sun as often as you can. UV light bleaches clothes.

Spirallingdownwards · 21/10/2023 18:29

30 degree was is where your issue is

wantmorenow · 21/10/2023 18:31

Napisan. Game changer.

I use the pink stuff stain powder in the polos my daughters look like she's at nursery and she's 10 drives me crazy!

Mine have 2 days out of one shirt and then they’re washed in mix on 40 or with whites in 60 and I’ve never noticed any greying. In fact younger DC wears older DCs handmedowns so they had lots of use. Their shirts are M&S and Next; I mention it in case the brand makes a difference to how they wash

FallingAutumnLeaf · 21/10/2023 18:39

All 10 white shirts go in the machine on a Sat morning, 60C, with vanish. Nothing else there.

Outside on the line if at all possible.

I'd say temperature up, and whitener. But they won't ever go crisp white now.

BlanketyB · 21/10/2023 18:44

I wash whites separately and usually put in a scoop of vanish whitening.

I wash whites at 60 (unless they really can't take in and they I put them in with the 40 lights wash).

Pandapooks · 21/10/2023 20:01

I'd say 40 degree minimum and wash only whites together. I use bio powder and occasionally chuck soda crystals in. Rub washing up liquid into any stubborn stains before washing. I'm often able to hand most shirts down to 2nd child so not doing too badly 😂

catsnore · 21/10/2023 20:54

Soak in napisan or Milton overnight. Wash at 60. Dry in direct sunlight (if we get any 😂)

Jellybean23 · 21/10/2023 22:38

If living in a soft water area, use the extra rinse function every time. A build up of detergent soon turns whites grey. I'd definitely wash at 40C - schools are dirty places.

This is what I did recently when they were starting to look dingy. Worked very well.

GoldenKiwi · 21/10/2023 22:54

Oh and I use powder, not liquid, when washing. And always 40 degrees.

Theoldwoman · 21/10/2023 22:55

Hot wash - 60 degrees preferably.
Powder ( I use Aldi)
A bit of Napisan.
Only have whites in the machine. Nothing with any bit of colour on.
Hang in sun wherever possible.

LoisLane23 · 22/10/2023 12:36

Brilliant thanks all, had forgot about napisan. Ill up the anti all round! They are all m&s, so should be decent, it would marginally help if school accepted the use of painting aprons but that's another tale 😂

hairspray on paint/biro stains before washing.

and agree with pp. wash separately at 40 degrees or higher with bio powder.
hang up outside to dry (even on an overcast day the light makes a difference).
oxy type bleach with whitener (vanish silver pot) also helps.
