Which Dehumidifier?

sloewine · 12/10/2023 12:02

I've got a heated airer and it's creating loads of moisture in the living room (nowhere else to keep it really and we like the heat).

Can't work out which size I need tbh, the airer is on a lot as we seem to have a lot of laundry - 2 adults + 1 dog.

Was looking at a Meaco arete 12L to put downstairs will it cover the whole house or do I need to stick one upstairs too?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you've landed here looking for dehumidifier recommendations, we've recently updated our best dehumidifiers page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users.
We hope you find it useful,

No advice sorry but I want one too so watching this thread. I need to know what size too

It depends on your house size. If you look at the Ebac website, it lets you choose by small flat, medium house, large house. You should only need one but it will need to be a powerful version if your home is large. I think Ebac says to put them on the landing if you've got stairs. We've had 2 Ebacs in the past and they were fine. We're happy with our current Dimplex dehumidifier and it is truly a workhorse. I think I prefer it to the Ebacs as it has been better at drying laundry.

For laundry it is best to put the dehumidifier into your smallest room with the laundry to get it dry, then wheel the dehumidifier back out to the living area to dry the home air again. That way your laundry gets dry promptly without your air being muggy.

Peltier dehumidifiers (as opposed to compressor or dessicant) are the small ones that are quiet and do hardly anything. They're the only type to avoid as they're useless.

Oh and I don't rate the "smart" versions as much as the old fashioned, turn on when the air is wet versions. Our smart Ebac wouldn't turn on after people used the shower when the air was like a cloud?? Our Dimplex turns on when the air gets above the % humidity you've set it to, like if you set it to 8 it would turn on when the air is above 20% humid (for laundry) or keeping it at 5 keeps the air at 50% humidity. It is easy and straightforward and will turn on and off as needed to keep at that level.

Meaco 20l. It’s amazing. When we first got it the tank was full in 24hrs. We didn’t even have any noticeable condensation prior!

Meaco Arete is a great dehumidifier. The bigger one for a 2-3 bedroom house, definitely.

We went with the cheapest Argos full-size one and it was surprisingly effective. You can only really work on one floor at a time due to the way air moves around the house so if both floors need constant dehumidification you might need two, otherwise it's a lot cheaper to get one and keep hoiking it upstairs for a few hours a day until the moisture is under control, then we dropped down to using it about once a week for a couple of hours on each floor (this was a very problematic house for moisture).

When we moved to a bigger, but better ventilated house I think we only used it about once a month when the windows were too steamed up in winter and we couldn't open them due to rainstorms (Donegal was wet).

I have the meaco and it's on the landing as we were getting mould in the bathroom and box room and it's really good. I was thinking of getting a smaller one for the extension room as that's where I dry the washing on a heated airer. Depends how open your house is

Sexnotgender · 12/10/2023 19:38

Meaco are great, I have a 20/25l one - it’s fantastic.

TomatoSandwiches · 12/10/2023 19:44

We have the Meaco 20L one and it's great.

JustKen · 12/10/2023 20:01

I've had a few cheapo ones and they never ladt long IME. As pp have said Meaco make the best ones. Pricey but they last. My current one has been running for about four years so far.

forrestgreen · 12/10/2023 20:51

Meaco
If you ring them and tell them how big your house is they'll help you.

SweetPetrichor · 12/10/2023 21:01

We have a meaco 20l downstairs and it’s great. We run it when drying clothes and it speeds up drying. I’d definitely recommend it.
We also have a smaller 10 (ish) litre Challenger one upstairs which also does the job but isn’t as good as the Meaco. It’s used more for after showers.
