Is this salvageable?

2 of our dining chairs are like this from various kids spills. I honestly don't know how they have gotten so bad!

I've tried to clean up patches over the years with upholstery cleaners and it's made it worse.

How would you tackle this? Would a steam cleaner help?

Upholstered dining chairs are easy to re-cover. Turn upside down, unfix seat (usually a few screws), then decide whether you're taking off the old fabric or just covering up (leave the underlayer which is usually flame retardant). Staple gun, go side to side to ease the tension in the fabric, fold corners in on the diagonal before nearly folding sides over the top.

What @Mumaway said go to Dunelm or another shop that sells fabric by the meter, I'd guess you'll need about 1-1.5 metres, you want an upholstery weight fabric as it will be more hardwearing than a quilting weight.

Measure the seat cushion, add about 5 cm on each side, so if the cushion is 30x30cm, make it up to 40x40cm.

Roll of fabric come in different widths, if it's 154cm wide then you'd be able to get 3 squares out of 0.5 metre

Do you know anyone with a Vax spotwash?

A good glug of carpet/upholster cleaner in the solution section along with the recommended level of water in the Spotwash should do the trick.

Mine is brilliant for things like this although may need doing more than once.

Sometimes the water can seep through to the stuffing and this can produce a stain, to add to the one you are trying to deal with. I would go with previous suggestions and recover, which is really simple to do.

CleaningFrenzy14 · 11/10/2023 17:55

@YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME yes I think that's what's happened when I have tried to clean it.

I know re-covering may seem easy but not to me 😩(i don't even own a staple gun). I may start with trying to clean it again and get someone to re cover them if it fails. I don't need them to be perfect but need a serious improvement from how they are now. They were quite expensive too 😥

They are salvageable. Get some car upholstery shampoo from Halfords or online, and gently rub in with a brush. Any car detailing all purpose cleaner will also do the trick.

If you have a wet / dry vacuum you can vacuum out the moisture once your done.

Check out a YouTube channel called Ammo NYC, he's a detailer with tons of tutorials, just find the one for car seats and use what he says on your chairs.

You can also often buy stretchy velvet type covers on eBay in common sizes. They're as little as £2. We got some for our high back chairs as a quick solution and they looked so good we kept them

Shaving foam cleaned my very dirty ottoman up a treat.

CMOTDibbler · 11/10/2023 18:51

Try Nancy Birtwhistle dryish cleaning method

fizzyfood · 11/10/2023 18:53

My car seats looked similar, used a vax and they came up good.

You can buy covers in Amazon etc. That are elasticated and you just pop them in if you can't get it clean.
