Washing curtains

Apologies for the exciting topic. I’ve just got some curtains out of a bag that have been stored for about a year. They are quite foists; not mould foisty but just generally carrying a bit of a smell of the old house and a bit storage smelling.

The price of dry cleaning looks extortionate - they are large curtains. Has anybody washed their curtains successfully? They are lined with a cotton lining and they are cotton themselves. I am thinking of risking them in a washing machine at a low temperature.

Thanks

This is what I love about MN. Foisty is fusty but a bit more damp smelling. Foists is indeed a totally different word which my iPhone autocorrected to. It tried feisty and firstly beforehand.

I’m from Yorkshire if that explains it Grin

Thanks for all the suggestions they’ve been really helpful.

AuntieJoyce. No need to risk your lovely curtains in the wash!

If you have a tumble dryer with a low heat setting then I can highly recommend you buy a pack of Dry Cleaners Secrets Sheets which are less than £10 on ebay.

Just 20 minutes with one sheet on the low tumble dryer setting per pair and your curtains will come out really fresh and clean and smell beautiful.

I have used these for years! Terrific, no worries about shrinkage and really cheap too.
