Hi all need some advice as i employ a cleaner one day a week for 2 hours and i feel she's taking advantage of me as she never does the agreed 2 hours as it always seems to be my time that gets wasted as last time she was ill for 2 weeks. She still wanted to be paid for those two weeks

If you're not happy with the service provided, then give her notice that services are no longer required & look for a new cleaner.

As for the weeks she was off, I'm guessing you don't pay her tax & NI, so you don't employ her. You engage her services. No service was provided, so there no payment due unless you've signed a contract with her that states otherwise

Think you need to find yourself a new cleaner , as a cleaner myself you don’t expect to be paid for being off sick , she is not employed by yourself and I expect she is self employed . Can’t actually believe she’s asked to be paid for her being sick .

Well i understand we're in a cost of living crisis which is fine but yeah as they say if your ill and didn't do a days work you don't get paid

She's totally taking the mick.

I recently advertised for a cleaner using Facebook selling groups and within a week had received 85 responses. Try that and get someone less cheeky!

Your original post says you ‘employ’ a cleaner.
If this is the case, you may well owe her SSP if she meets the criteria.

If, however, she is self employed then you do not employ her and she isn’t entitled to any sick pay.
Perhaps some clarification between both parties so you each are clear on the arrangement and responsibilities

I give them a list of jobs that I know would take me three hours - my cleaner does 3 hours twice a week, as below

Clean bathrooms
Mop hard floors
Vacuum carpets
Dust
Wipe door plates/light switches
Polish mirrors

Ironing (about two hours)
Week one: ground floor paintwork
Week two: 1st floor paintwork
Week three: 2nd floor paintwork
Week three: vacuum lamp shades, dust tops of pictures, etc.

If she can do it faster than three hours, that's fine by me providing everything's done.

She never has to touch the kitchen nor utility except for the floors because they are kept spotless.
