Carpet in the entrance hall?

We’re getting new flooring put in next year and need to start making decisions.

Our house is a shoe free zone. We have a hallway to the side of the front door, it’s almost a room in itself. It doesn’t lead to any other rooms. So when we come in, we walk into the hallway, take off our shoes and coats etc then walk back out and into the rest of the house.

We live somewhere that gets snow in winter, and can be muddy especially in Spring. We currently have a light coloured laminate that gets soaking wet and very dirty very quickly. We do have a mat both inside and outside the front door, but the kids come in covered in snow so it doesn’t help much. Every winter there are actual puddles in the hallway from their wet clothes and shoes.

Would it be ridiculous to get a carpet or large rug for the hallway? Something hard wearing and a dark colour. I’m imagining that it would soak up the snow but not sure if it’s a good idea or not.

Would be interested in hearing opinions, especially from people who live in a snowy climate.

We've got a rug which gets washed with the carpet washer when I remember. A rug is easier to change than fitted carpet if it gets destroyed. Mine is polypropene and 11 years old. Still in good condition.

Similar situation here. We have a washable rug for the front hall. It is amazing how filthy it gets despite frequent hoovering, watching the wash water is actually quite disgusting. www.ruggable.co.uk

I have tile right inside the door and a giant indoor/outdoor rug for the winter months. We get a lot of snow and this rug is big enough for a lot of shoes.
