Please recommend me a good tumble dryer

My tumble dryer just died and cannot be fixed

I will be getting money towards a new one from the extended warranty people.

Dont mind a condensor or a vented. Not too keen on hotpoint as the thermostats seem to go all the time.

Apart from that im easy!

oops mine is Hotpoint. its ok. only had it a year. must say it does not seem to dry as well as it did...woul dhtat be the thermostat?

MorocconOil · 04/03/2008 14:41

Just got a John Lewis own brand condenser a few months ago. It seems pretty good.

sugarpear · 04/03/2008 16:36

Flum yes that would be the thermostat.Mine used to go on a monthly basis. And it takes them a week to come fix it! I didnt care it kept breaking down too much as it was under an extended warranty so didnt have to pay out each time it was just the inconvenience of it.

but have found a lovely one on freemans its a black hoover vision but at 400 quid im ??? about it does look lovely though!

According to my incredibly useful handyman (worked for Norweb for 30 years), if you can vent then don't get a condenser - vented are quicker, more efficient and much cheaper to run.

IIRC he said don't get Indesit or any of those cheap ones, and don't get Creda or Hotpoint either (they are the same company now & Creda are not what they used to be)

I think he said Zanussi and AEG are OK. And Whirlpool maybe. Otherwise go for the 2 old favourites, Miele & Bosch, though Mieles are always way more expensive.

WendyWeber · 04/03/2008 16:42

And he said don't touch Hoover with a ten foot pole

sugarpear · 04/03/2008 17:26

Thanks ww definately wouldnt touch hotpoint again.

Havent ordered anything yet so will ahve another proper look when kids setteld in bed so if anyone else has one they can suggest id be v grateful!

Who knew it would be so hard to get a tumble drier!

Which recommended this Whirlpool as a good cheap vented one - 6kg capacity.

Next one up by price was this Zanussi which has 7kg capacity.

EsmeWeatherwax · 04/03/2008 18:49

WW, really? Are Hoover rubbish? I've just bought one from them and its absolutely brilliant, 8kg vented, dries everything in incredibly quickly. I love it!

WendyWeber · 04/03/2008 19:47

It's reliability more than performance I think, Esme. I once bought a top-of-the-range Hoover dishwasher, and it worked OK, but it flooded the kitchen regularly and I replaced it after 2 years because I was fed up with the floods.

There is less to go wrong with a dryer though so you may be OK

AdamAnt · 04/03/2008 19:49

Miele are v good, but pricey.

2GIRLS · 05/03/2008 10:10

Don't get hotpoint, my tumble dryer on its way out and when it finally goes we're going to get a Bosch. They give a 2 year warranty too (they did for the washing machine and dishwasher bought 2 years ago so I'm sure they still do)

EsmeWeatherwax · 05/03/2008 12:23

Lol, WW I hope so. Although I did, of course, buy a Hoover washer at the same time. Sigh...

But I'd definitley avoid Hotpoint at all costs. Was quite glad when mine finally broke, hated it so much.

sugarpear · 06/03/2008 12:56

well i have been informed my policy was a new for old which i didnt even know about! And just had a phone call im getting a brand new one on monday free!
