Cleaning inside of dishwasher? (Pic included)

As a relative newbie to owning a dishwasher, is it normal to get this kind of gunk and build up on the inside? This is when you pull out the drawers, though around the seal of the door is a bit dirty too after a wash. I am trying to get into it with a cloth but can't get it all out these drawer runners. It's a fairly new slimline Bosch and we do scrape plates though there is obviously bits of porridge residue on bowls, baked on bits on ceramic oven dishes etc. and I'm sure it should be designed to handle that without needing to take the whole thing apart! Oh, and this is not the first time I'm cleaning it so it would be even more caked if I'd left it! What does everyone else do?

Buy a cleaner I get mine from the £ shop don't buy branded they are expensive. Empty and clean the drain at the bottom of your dishwasher that can get gunky don't run your dishwasher on quick cycles it's useless and leaves dishes gunky.

Mrsjayy · 18/09/2023 12:13

You run the cleaners on an empty dishwasher.

After a cleaning cycle, try to get it immediately after a cycle has finished so that it is warm and a bit steamy. Try a little brush/ toothbrush to get into nooks and crannies.

I’ve just been and looked at mine and it’s perfectly clean . I use the Finish in wash cleaner ( they come in a pack of 3 ) on the 1st of every month and for that wash I put it on the 70 cycle . The rest of the time I use the 50 eco cycle on the reduced time function so it takes just over 1 hour . My husband does the drain / filters when he remembers .

How strange OP, I also have a slimline Bosch dishwasher and had the same problem. I cleaned the runners with Elbow Grease spray and kitchen paper yesterday, also did the filter out etc. never had the issue with other dishwashers in the past.

Pashazade · 18/09/2023 12:38

I didn't get this with my old Bosch I do with my new. You can take out everything, all the runners come out, it is a bit of a faff to clean the wheels as the trays are so big but it needs doing. So every few months I strip it down and give everything a good clean. (YouTube is your friend for the fiddly removal bits)

Thank you. I saw there were dishwasher cleaning products but I thought they were more like a limescale thing and we have soft water, and also even if not, assumed they wouldn't get everything out the drawer runners etc if a normal hot wash still leaves it like this. I use a mix of cycles but they're all the longer ones (auto, eco or intensive). I'll give them a go then.

The dishwasher cleaner things may not work unless you use them weekly. I use one monthly and it doesn't make any difference to the grungy bits in the edges and runners.

I run a hot wash with a ramekin of white vinegar, (use white vinegar on a cloth to run around seals etc) followed by a second short wash with baking soda sprinkled on the bottom. I do it once a month and find this better than the dishwasher cleaners at keeping the grime off

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 18/09/2023 14:10

This seems to be a Bosch problem, I never had this with my Indesit or Hotpoint ones. It’s quite reassuring people have it, it is just a bad design.

We do the filter cleaning and I wipe it out with kitchen towel, but it’s a pain.

MaybeSmaller · 18/09/2023 14:14

It shouldn't get that gunky in normal use but you do need to do a periodic maintenance wash cycle (normal cycle) without dishes in it. You can use a dishwasher cleaner, or some people swear by vinegar.

If you never do a maintenance wash then yes you will get nasty gunk building up.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 18/09/2023 14:14

I have a Bosch dishwasher and I’ve never had this. I clean the filters when I start noticing residue in or on the glasses but I very rarely use any kind of cleaner. And we live in a very hard water area.

LadyofLansallos · 23/09/2023 12:11

Ah! I have a new Bosch dishwasher and having exactly the same problem. Didn’t happen with my old model, exact same water & dishwasher products… it’s gross.

RosyCheekBird · 23/09/2023 12:21

I get this with my Bosch. I thought all dishwashers had this problem but clearly not! Grrr. I use a toothpick Envy

Langsdestiny · 23/09/2023 12:25

Ok maybe a stupid question but how do you do the vinegar. I use a dishwasher cleaner but not that effective.

I've used vinegar I just "scooshed" at the bottom of the dishwasher and run it on empty with a dishwasher pod

We have a Bosch too and tbh I think it's crap. We have to put stuff in rinsed mostly or it comes out with speckles and dried k. Crap. I'm not impressed
