Washing up bowl

Do you have a plastic bowl in the sink or just wash up in the sink?

Is having a washing up bowl a bit dated now? I think it makes it difficult to clean!

Sorry for the world's most boring question!

I have one, uses less water and if a glass or something slips from my hand, it's less likely to break.

Angie147836 · 09/09/2023 11:01

They're vile, filthy things - I don't have one - but quite useful if you only have a single sink. As PP has said, they might be good for delicate items.

DiscoBeat · 09/09/2023 11:08

I think saying they're vile, filthy things is a bit melodramatic! Anything can be vile and filthy if you don't clean it. We use one because our single kitchen sink is a huge butler type and that way we can wash up without using huge amounts of water and breaking glasses. Also I like to have hot soapy water ready during cooking so I can wash and clean as I go, but still drain eg pasta water away. But I clean the bowl as soon as I empty it.

derrydee · 09/09/2023 15:03

I actually think mine might be vile! Accidentally started watching cleaning videos and never see them.

I use one when we get a hosepipe ban, as I use the rinsing water on my garden. It's no more filthy than my sink, I keep them both clean!
I find it a bit irritating, but I think water shouldn't be squandered!

abyssofwoah · 09/09/2023 15:56

I don’t have one, I’m not a fan. My mum has one with a plug hole in it, seems a bit redundant to me!

Theraffarian · 09/09/2023 16:21

I hope my isn’t vile and filthy ! It gets a quick clean everyday , so don’t see why it would be . It’s a bit smaller than my sink , so if it’s in use , say with dishes soaking, I can still rinse things from the tap at the side of it while I’m cooking . Sadly I only have the one kitchen sink so needs must .

BananaBender · 09/09/2023 16:28

As a non-UK person I have no idea why you’d use one. You have a sink. Use that for washing up, otherwise what’s the point of having a sink?

beguilingeyes · 09/09/2023 16:38

I am a klutz and would break/smash so much stuff without a bowl. Uses a lot less water too
Can't do it without gloves either.

Ambleen · 09/09/2023 17:57

I have one for delicate glasses and in the summer for collecting the veg rinsing water for my outside plant watering. I generally don't keep it in the sink. It isn't dirty as it fits in the dishwasher upside down over the plates.

Talipesmum · 09/09/2023 20:03

I had one when I had a single sink. I don’t now we have a one-and-a-half-sink. This is cos I always need to tip stuff away without getting the washing up water mucky (eg washing up milky cereal bowls - I’d quickly rinse out the milkiness then wash in the hot water. Or I’d tip away the bits of tea in mugs.).

Of course you can manage without tipping away and rinsing as you go - I do when camping etc - but it’s easier for me to do it in the 0.5 sink or down the side of the washing up bowl. Also I do wash up in the right order (glasses etc first and mucky stuff last) but it still makes it easier.

Theoldwoman · 10/09/2023 13:46

Never heard of a washing up bowl as a regular thing. Only used in camping kitchens.

greenacrylicpaint · 10/09/2023 13:49

I have one for soaking my feet. perfect size for that.

Sgtmajormummy · 10/09/2023 13:53

^^Recommended for single sink owners, Belfast sinks and students. The screw plug is the stroke of genius.

WeWereInParis · 10/09/2023 13:59

They're vile, filthy things

But if you had one, wouldn't you keep it clean in the same way you kept the actual sink clean? I used to have one when I only had a single sink and used it so that I could rinse dishes down the side of the sink without adding more water to the bowl. Now I have a double sink I don't need it. But it never got filthy, I don't understand why the bowl would be dirtier than a sink?

derrydee · 10/09/2023 15:02

Weirdly I think the bowl is difficult to clean - or at least it's more to clean, bowl +sink. And often full of water just sat there (I know avoidable if turned upside down).

We only have a single sink but we use a dishwasher anyway so think I'm going to put ours in the cupboard for a week or two to see if we miss it!

I’m from the UK and I don’t understand it at all.

fiddlesticksandotherwords · 10/09/2023 15:19

I've always used one, and don't understand people who say they are filthy.

PurpleMonkeys · 10/09/2023 15:20

I have one.

I'm an idle washerer upperer..

I make a weak solution if washing liquid and water in a spray bottle. Spritz plates after use and leave on the side. Fill bowls with water and leave in side.
When I'm ready to wash up, probably like three days later... half fill bowl with hot water.
Tip the spritzed water and bowls down the side of washing up bowl and wipe with sponge and they're pretty clean. Then use the half bowl hot water to rinse and scrub to a shine. Put on drainer.

If I had one of those fancy posh double sinks with a little side sink thingy, I'd use that instead, but I ain't not posh I ain't not..

PurpleMonkeys · 10/09/2023 15:29

For those that don't undersrand it.

Ok.
Imagine one sink.
It's full of clean water.

You pick up a soup bowl with dregs or a ceralnbowl with a bit of milk left. Or a spatula with grease in it.

Where do you tip the dregs, milk or rinse greasy spatula?

If you've one sink, do you dirty up the clean water?

If you've a sink and a bowl, you can tip the dregs, milk and rinse grease off and down the side of the bowl, thus keeping water clean.

I hope that makes sense..

😁

Popcornflavour · 10/09/2023 15:32

Have always and will always use one. I give it a good scrub every day and air dry. I mainly use to wash DCs water bottles and anything else that doesn't go in the dishwasher.
100% team washing up bowl!

beguilingeyes · 10/09/2023 17:09

I want one of those. It looks a bit small though. They sometimes turn up in TK Maxx.
