Low energy fluffy towels

Does anyone have a method for getting fluffy towels by using the tumble dryer for a minimal amount of time?
I'm usually an insufferable eco warrior but I hate crunchy towels and it's basically the only reason I have/use the tumble dryer.
It's such a hot day outside and the towels are in the wash now.
Shall I put them outside to dry for a bit first and then finish them off in the dryer? Or other way round?

Dry then outside then pop them in the dryer on air only with dryer balls - helps soften them up

This is a question I'd like to answer also. I hate non tumble dried towels but I know how expensive it is and how rubbish it is to use my dryer.

Mine go in tumbler for 10 mins then get pegged out on the line.

Used to do it the opposite way (peg out then tumble) this way they feel softer.

I don't use fabric softener only soda crystals.

I dry mine outside then tumble for ten minutes. It helps if they aren't too dry.
