Kitchen compost caddy

What is the best thing for getting rid of grease ( from jars of peppers and artichokes ) from the base of a a kitchen compost caddy. I line it with a compostable bag which always seems to burst but grease remains. Despite washing it in Fairy liquid and a dishwashing tablet it just doesn't seem clean and is definitely not fresh smelling.
It won't fit in the dishwasher Sad
Bleach ?
Thanks in advance.

I always line mine with a couple of sheets of kitchen towel under the compostable bag. But I don't put anything that greasy in mine anyway. Are you just pouring liquid oil into it?

I put newspaper in the bottom of mine and then when it's emptied into the large food waste bin, I fill it with washing up liquid and hot water and let it stand for a bit. Does the job.

Bleach should work too.

Thank you

@Seeline I drain some of the oil from jars of grilled peppers and aubergines into the compost bin.
I presume that's ok ?

I try not to put anything too running the compost bin as the bag either gets a hole or it just starts degrading straight away.

Why not put it down the sink?

dementedpixie · 01/09/2023 21:02

Oil should never go down the sink. I wouldn't put oil in the kitchen caddy. I'd put the jar with the oil in the general waste instead

And I’d pour the oil down the sink and recycle the jar.

No I wouldn't put this in the kitchen caddy. We aren't supposed to put liquids in ours

Oil down the sink forms fatbergs in the sewers. If you want to recycle the jar then put the oil in a freezer bag in the general waste or use kitchen roll to soak it up. Never pour it down the sink

SwedishEdith · 01/09/2023 21:05

We double bag ours.

Our local instructions say no oils or fats, so I never put them in mine.

don’t pour them down the sink either - that’s how we get fatbergs! Pour oil into an oil and fat jar which you chuck in the bin when full.

pengymum · 01/09/2023 21:08

I use the oil to cook - is full of flavour!
Too good to waste!
And saves money buying oil.

Stratocumulus · 01/09/2023 21:09

Do not put any oil down the sink, or toilet, ever. It creates a “fat burg.” Contributes to street & domestic drains’ blockages etc.

Best line caddy with newspaper after washing up
liquid or bio detergent sparingly with kettle of really hot water. Soak a bit & tip out.
Wipe out to to dry with a cloth or kitchen paper loaded with de-greasing formula.
I also use Zoflora scented disinfectant or the Aldi equivalent from time to time. Smells lovely.

cantkeepawayforever · 01/09/2023 21:14

The type of all purpose cleaning liquid usually added to buckets of water for mopping floors etc works well. Pour in a capful neat, swish about then top up with very hot water for a soak.

Our council swapped garden waste bins for food bins, the very week we all had norovirus so ours is kept as the token sick bucket.

our neighbours are elderly and so we tend to do their bins, they're double bagged, never seem to leak.

Our binmen have a tub to collect fats/oils, God knows what they do with them though...
