Anyone got a built in vacuum cleaner?

Just saw it mentioned when browsing Rightmove and googled to find out what it was - apparently you plug the hose into different slots around the house and all the dirt is collected centrally.

Never heard of it before today!

Does anyone have one?

Well you heard of it before me so! I had to google it and saw this website. Looks cool.

And I'm just coming to terms with the robot vacuum 😂

That was what I found. I'm nearly 50 and have never heard of this before!

Perhaps it's more common in other countries. My parents have one in their house built in the 80s abroad. They have two slots downstairs and one upstairs. The central vacuum container is in a heated storage room and they empty it whenever it gets full.

How do they find it - is it sufficiently more convenient than a conventional vacuum to justify the expense of installation?

@FutureThroughLensOfThePast my dad says they love it. It's more convenient than a traditional hoover and better for the room air as it doesn't spread dust as dirt gets sucked into the main container at the storage room. Apparently it wasn't expensive to install at the 80s and they still sell them nowadays. 5-6 different brands available and people get them to houses, not that much to flats.

I wonder why they've never caught on in the UK.

That is amazing. It does look a bit costly around a few thousands maybe? I'd love to hear from someone that is one installed

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 27/08/2023 20:08

It was/maybe still is very common in the USA. I haven't heard of anyone I know of having it in the UK.

We had one when we lived overseas when I was a child, so either the US or Netherlands, 1980s.

I have it, it was already in the e house when we bought it and it was installed during construction. It is quite convenient but I am not sure I would have installed it myself, especially now in the Roomba er.

A builder I know says he installs it in a lot of new builds and the customers really rave about it.

I have it. Installed in as meant to be wonderful. Hate it. Some cumbersome. Love the Dyson v10 with all my life!
