Induction or ceramic/ordinary hob?

I have an ordinary electric ceramic hob (Ariston). It's still going strong after 20 years and barely a scratch. New kitchen on the way and I don't know whether to stick with a new ceramic or get an induction hob.

Anyone had both and which do you prefer? Any downsides to induction. I think certain pots and pans are necessary to work with induction.

Induction. By miles!!!

You do need specific pots & pans but they sell them pretty much everywhere.

Induction absolutely. Ordinary hobs take 3 million years to heat up.

Induction definitely! We switched a couple of years ago from gas - sometimes I miss my gas for certain things but on the whole really impressed with induction.

Thanks all. Are the controls easy for an idiot like me 😂

I don't know anyone who has one so appreciate your comments. I'm a bit stuck in my ways but induction sounds good, instant control of temp a bit like gas?

yes, the controls are easy peasy. very like gas in that you can whoosh the temp up and down at speed. worth reading some reviews and doing some research as some induction hobs are better than others. as with all these things.

you could start by buying a single induction hob from ikea (£50ish) to see how you get on with it? Really handy gadget to help cope at Christmas/any other big cooking event.

Induction every time.

Had an induction installed when I had the kitchen done and loved it.

Moved to a new build that had gas. Couldn't justify ripping out a brand new hob but missed my induction every single day.

Just had a new kitchen fitted and first on the shopping list was an induction hob. I'm happy again!!

Worth the research and investing in a good one with good power!!x

It's quicker than gas, no flame to blow out, the kitchen stays cool, the hob is easier to clean. I had to cook Christmas lunch at MIL's on her gas hob, it seemed so slow by comparison.

Batinhernightdress · 24/08/2023 07:59

Gas.

Induction are better, but having a second means of cooking is something that will be invaluable.

I know I sound like a crazy prepper, but there have been talks about issues with the electricity system and the possibilities of rolling blackouts, on a smaller scale a local area were without electricity for four days when part of the substation caught fire.

Induction all the way but be aware of the ring sizes and the size of your pans. I have a hob where you can combine zones so not limited to one ring for larger frying/saute pan. Very easy to control and incredibly easy to clean too.

I went from gas to induction. Induction hobs are very easy to use and keep clean. I’m not sure if it’s just mine but you can’t control the temperature as well on an induction hob, it has like heat spurts if you know what I mean. Are you into cooking? If you’re a keen foodie I’d do lots of research on how the heat controls work before buying.

I have always cooked on gas. Early august I moved into a house that had induction and had to throw out all my lane which was annoying. However I like it now that I have got used to it. It heats things up really quickly and so much easier to keep clean than a dusky gas one.
