Bed bugs

Advice please. im so stressed. Is this what I am
manisfesting?!
After a rodent issue in the attic I have just discovered bed bugs in my bedroom (a newly furnished bedroom).
i am not sure how to proceed or where to start. I feel itchy just writing this post.
My 1 year old has had red spots on body and then me and my husband which led me to the GP and now to the conclusion about the BB.
I am due to go away for the long weekend but feel so deflated about the issue at home - where does one even start?!
i mean what do I do?
cost is an issue… struggling atm as it is.
Can this be covered on home insurance?

If you're going away for the weekend there is a good chance you will take them with you and infect somewhere else... You should probably avoid spreading this problem elsewhere.

Skyblue18 · 23/08/2023 16:36

Have you got evidence of bed bugs ie google typical signs, especially if you can't see them.

There are little flying insects you can hardly see that produce the same itchy spots as bed bugs. Ive no experience of bed bugs but I know what those little flying blighters can cause.

Skyblue18 · 23/08/2023 16:39

Their common name is no seeums. They bite and you can't see them 🤦‍♀️
Just a suggestion 👍

WorseDecision · 23/08/2023 16:48

Need to get pest control in, and literally wash & steam everything afterwards.

Don't go away as they'll be in your stuff/suitcases and you'll infect somewhere else.

Almahart · 23/08/2023 16:50

Your council should have pest control, contact them. In the meantime, wash everything you can on a hot wash and bag it up. If you've got a steamer, then steam mattresses and bed frames. It's a nightmare, but the sooner you get on top of it the better

Thankyou for the advice.
Yes I have found a few dead BB once i moved the bed.

How long does the process take and any comforting words? Im so stressed atm. We have carpet everywhere and fabric bed and ottomon.
and 3 kids.

A tenant left these for us, laminate flooring so easier to spot. Took us three treatments in an empty room over six weeks to clear them out.

If you're going away for the weekend, strip the bed, stand the mattress up open all wardrobe doors, drawers before treating the room. We used industrial stuff used in nursing homes. It stank. Organise pest control. You maybe lucky and one treatment could be enough.

You have to find exactly where the are hiding during the daytime.
I had to dismantle a bed once and the found the majority of the in one of the slat holders.
Once you have done that and got rid of the ones you see, you need to kill then all and get the special powder that chops them up when they walk over it.
Sprinkle it everywhere and hoover as many times as a day as possible.
Spray and keep looking in the hiding space for new colonies.
There will be masses of them somewhere, you just need to find them

BlastedSkreet · 23/08/2023 17:12

Are you sure it is bed bugs not fleas? Can you get a picture of one. And look in the mattress seams - any there?

Ive just been quoted £2,700 for a heat treatment.
Guaranteed for 6 months.

AaHu · 23/08/2023 17:40

What treatment should I use? I have a fabric bed frame. Would I remove the clothes from the cupboard before treatment?

OP posts:
Mynewnameis · 23/08/2023 17:40

I looked this up last week for our council to treat and it was £200-300

stayclosetoyourself · 23/08/2023 17:44

Maybe it's related to the hot early summer weather?
We're there any in the sheets or could they be those little moths??

AaHu · 23/08/2023 18:05

Is this the heat treatment or spray?

How do people sleep in their homes knowing bed bugs live there?

OP posts:
fizzyfood · 23/08/2023 18:45

My mum had them, brought back from a holiday abroad. Got pest control in and cost around £1000 they never came back and that was 9 years ago.

stayclosetoyourself · 23/08/2023 18:48

I know you can get them from old furniture / beds. At one time they were incredibly rare in uk

Hope you can get this sorted ASAP

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 24/08/2023 12:24

Hope you get rid of them soon.
If it's any consolation, one of the poshest hotels in Edinburgh is absolutely rife with them. They travel. Probably a very common problem.
Information from a direct source.

Friends in NYC says never, never stay in a hotel there even 5 star
