Hey me decide: cordless or not vacuum cleaner?

I have been flip flopping as I don't want to spend loads of money on both plus I can't store both types. Dh says just get one type.

I desperately need a new vacuum cleaner. I narrowed it down to a miele one cat and dog complete I think, but DM adamant that her cordless Dyson is amazing and I know I'd really benefit from being able to do kitchen floors more regularly to keep on top of crumbs. Plus it's good on stairs. Plus the area by the door that gets mud trodden in. I like the idea of spot cleaning with a light and ready to go device.

I have equal carpets and hard floors. The cordless would stay in a cupboard. I haven't got wall space so itd probably going to be plugged in recharging in the corner of my kitchen.

I liked the Henry quick but it requires bags. Dyson has a trigger you press and hold down which is annoying.

Ideally I want both the miele corded one and the dyson cordlesss so I can deep clean with the plug in version and spot clean with the cordless. Should I just get the cordless, hope it's not flakey and breaks in a year or 2 and then see how I get on?

Help appreciated here...

Dyson is great for hard floors, but no good for carpets. You need an upright for them. Personified think you need both, but if you can only get one it’s the upright.

I have a Henry (well it’s dcs from uni really), a Miele cat & dog & a dyson cordless. Cleaner uses Miele and I use dyson. Henry is going back to dcs uni. I’ve used it a couple of times but quite heavy I find.

As an owner of a cordless dyson I wouldn't get another. Once the filter goes (1.5 years for me) that's it. I'm on my third and not again.

I'm in the market for a new vacuum and have just stayed at a holiday rental that had a brand new Henry I'm absolutely 110% getting one of those! Grin

We have Dyson cordless and love it for the crumbs and quick midweek runaround/stairs but it absolutely wouldn’t work as a full time hoover. Battery doesn’t last long enough and it can’t get carpets quite clean enough for deeper cleaning. If you can only have one I’d say stick with the cord.

I had cordless Dyson for ages, then got an upright shark when the cordless died. The upright shark is incredible on carpets, suction really good, but it's heavy. The size and convenience of a cordless Dyson is ideal for whizzing across the kitchen floor three times a day. With the shark being quite big and cumbersome you just don't bother lugging it about.
I ended up keeping shark upright upstairs for the carpets and stair carpet as it cleans so much better, then buying a cheaper cordless for £70 on Amazon which is perfectly good for whizzing across the kitchen floor multiple times a day.

I have both and it’s great - a corded Miele for weekly clean, and cordless Bosch for daily 5 mins - also has handheld detachment for the car, stairs etc.

Porridgeislife · 13/08/2023 08:56

We need 2. We have a Shark cordless for whizzing around the kitchen and hallway and a Miele cat & dog for carpets. It’s a hassle pulling a corded vacuum out for quick cleans and the cordless isn’t good enough for carpets.

knitnerd90 · 13/08/2023 09:03

Cordless is no good for carpets. If you can only get one, get the Miele. I have the C3 and it's the third person in my marriage.

AnOldCynic · 13/08/2023 09:05

Miele here for a decent hoover, Robovac day to day and a small handheld for stairs and upholstery.

If crumbs on a hard a quick sweep with a brush and a small handheld to pick up?

Looblou72 · 13/08/2023 10:14

I’ve had Miele pet corded, Dyson and shark cordless and currently have a Henry with turbo head. Can honestly say the Henry is fabulous, heavy but as good suction as the Miele and far cheaper. The shark cordless now just spits dirt back out so gone back to old fashioned broom for the hard floors as a daily clean and Henry 1-2 times a week before mopping. Would never have just a cordless, I just don’t think they clean as deeply, okay for a quick once over.

johnnydeppsslipper · 13/08/2023 10:28

I spent more on an all
Singing all dancing cordless shark than I did on the corded version.

Don't bother

Il never buy another cordless one again.

Margaritawithlime · 13/08/2023 10:31

We have a Miele c3. I’ve never loved a household appliance like I love this vacuum. Compact. Nowhere NEAR as heavy as my mums corded shark and the suction is beyond anything. Way beyond the dyson which we had and which I happily waved off to a new owner once the Miele came into my life.
having said that we also have cordless dyson - a tiny thing - which we use for the car etc and is ancient. It’s not bad exactly but not great.

Elizadoloads · 13/08/2023 11:07

I have mixed hard and carpeted floors and we had a Dyson and then a upright Vax. Don't rate them at all. I got a Henrey last year and it's by far the best hoover I've ever owned.

eurochick · 13/08/2023 11:21

Our Shark just died and we struggled to find a single replacement. We didn't want another Shark as it didn't last long and was very heavy. I refuse to buy Dyson because of his Brexit hypocrisy. We ended up with a Miele cylinder plug in for big cleans and our cleaner to use and a cordless Vax for quick cleans in between (both the pet hair versions as we have two fluffy cats). The combination is working well so far and cost about the same as a shark.

BackT · 13/08/2023 11:39

I don't think you can have a single one and really get the results you want.

I love my Dyson cordless (purchased pre Brexit hypocrisy) but I do use a plug in on the carpets every now and then. We have mostly hard floor though.

I tried to replace my Dyson with a cordless shark and it was terrible. Really heavy and just didn't do much at all.

I've had a Meile and a Henry and rated rhe Meile more

multisurface · 13/08/2023 11:43

I wouldn't have a cordless dyson as your only hoover.

I have a Henry for deep cleans and use the cordless dyson for a quick scoot round daily.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 13/08/2023 12:06

I tried many, many cordless vacs and none of them came close to the power of a mains vac. I spent a stupid amount of time finding the most powerful & highest rated cordless I could find and still needed to borrow a Henry once a fortnight or so, to get what the cordless couldn't!

They've got their uses, definitely but we're a long way off them being suitable as a main & only vac

SM4713 · 13/08/2023 12:20

We had a small, corded dyson for 20yrs before it died. I've read that the modern ones don't last as long though.

Then had a corded henry. The suction is amazing, but it needs bags and it heavy to pull around.

Currently looking into a eufy and Miele cordless. If you have a blue light card, you can ring Miele and get 20% off. They also have a factory outlet with products graded A-C. We recently renovated and bought a B grade fridge/freezer, and couldn't find a thing wrong with it, at a reasonable price. It has the same warranty as brand new products too. The list changes daily, so narrow down the item you want, and keep checking the list.

I really like my Dyson. The trigger button is annoying but other than that it's great. I also have equal hard floors to carpet

SM4713 · 13/08/2023 12:21

I meant to say, that I think the max wattage/power of vacuums changed a few years ago so we were compliant with EU regs. Now that we are out, I wonder if they will sell more powerful machines again?

ZenNudist · 13/08/2023 13:57

This is all helping and makes a lot of sense. I think I have had my head turned by cordless models but common sense tells me it's the miele c3. Still want a cheap cordless as well...
