Grrr, slugs just won’t give up!

I’m sat in bad watching a slug crawl up my skirting board in my bedroom - I live in a bungalow. I know that they are getting in from the void under my floor and squeezing in a microscopic gap between the skirting board and floorboard where the carpet is fitted. The void in 5 ft deep and I did have someone go down last year for maintenance and he did not find any evidence of slugs but it is damp down there and has an earth floor - it is designed to take ground water as my estate was built on marsh land.

I have waged war on slugs this year as I’m removing three or four a week, this is the second one tonight. They are still quite small but are growing bigger than when they first hatched a few weeks ago. They were only little worm like things at first but are now fatter and have little feelers like adult slugs. Still small enough for me to pick up in a tissue but I hate removing full size slugs which involved pieces of card and a deft flick!

I spray the edge of the carpet with a repellant every evening and have put slug pellets outside the bungalow in case they go out there as well. They are getting through a barrier of copper mesh which I have crammed into the gap between carpet and wall, which has a layer a crushed egg shells on top! My brand new carpet looks such a mess but I really am upset at slugs invading my bedroom!

Two in one night is taking the piss! I need to get up in 6 hours but the thought of them sliming around me in the dark is making me shiver! Off to dispose of this one now!

When you say void, is that your foundation?

Ihateslugs · 11/08/2023 01:23

I think so, it is like a cellar but not usable as a room. All the bungalows around here are the same, the space fills with water when the water table rises then it slowly drains away and dries up. I’ve have a trap door in the hall to access it but it’s not a pleasant experience! I know that after heavy rain there is standing water as a plumber once refused to go and fit some pipes as he did not have wellingtons! But it does seem to dry quickly as I have photos from two surveys which show the floor is bone dry.

I’ve lived here for 13 years and have only had slugs in my bedroom for the last four years but they are far worse this year! Obviously the rain for weeks in this area, NW, has not helped.

Have you tried salt ?

Ihateslugs · 11/08/2023 08:38

Don’t really want to use salt on new carpets, the slimy mess left after slugs dissolve after being salted will probably ruin the carpet! Also I found that leaving salt down next to gloss paint makes it bubble and mark the skirting board, this happened in my kitchen when I had big garden slugs coming in from under sink! I had to have the skirting boards replaced!

So, slept with light on last night! That did not deter slug number 3 from sneaking in around 3 am!

Seriously move house.

And dont buy a bungalow next time.

savethegorgeousbees · 11/08/2023 08:45

Omg I am having this exact nightmare in my kitchen.
Had it a few years ago pulled everything out and sealed/salted everything and seemed to work.
This year the fuckers have reappeared 😡.
So tried so far salted behind all the plinths and checked still all sealed. Leaving a light on, this doesn't work as still found one on the floor in the morning. So am know ordering copper mesh to cover my outside air bricks as surely this must be how the wee bastards get in. You have my full sympathy OP makes you feel very uncomfortable and house dirty.
