I'm fairly sure this subject does not belong here in GOOD housekeeping - but how do I clean cat s**t out of a big tub of lego?

Madam SpikyPaws has obviously mistaken ds1's nice rattly Lego in its nice big plastic tub for her litter tray (also a big plastic tub with rattly litter in).

So in my garden, I now have a big tub of catsh*t covered tiny pieces of Lego.

So when you have finished convulsing with either laughter or disgust, some ideas on how to clean and salvage it (if indeed that is even possible) would be welcome.

Reading this to dh, he suggested putting the cat in the washing machine to teach it not to do it again .

colditz · 24/02/2008 22:06

I can't put it in the bath, some of the pieces are so small they would go down the plughole!

well if youre doing it tomorrow, dont let it go dry tonight. soak it overnight in hot soapy/disinfectanty/bleachy water.

then it'll be softer and easier to shift.

FourPlusOne · 24/02/2008 22:07

I would hose it, then maybe stick in machine in pillowcase as someeone has suggested, and then a soak in a strong milton solution if poss - followed by a check of each piece, and extra scrub if needed, and throw away any pieces that can't be salvaged. Maybe an old bottle brush would be good for the job (or just buy one and throw it away afterwards).

I can totally understand why you would be reluctant to chuck it if could be saved, but you cat couldn't have chosen a more awkward toy to poo on could he! What a nightmare clean up job!

bananaknickers · 24/02/2008 22:07

My cat pissed in DS box of cars. I threw them away. YUK.

FourPlusOne · 24/02/2008 22:08

Sorry, took so long to write that have x posted with everyone.

southeastastra · 24/02/2008 22:09

ew put it all in a bucket to soak away the car mess, four months should do it

K999 · 24/02/2008 22:10

Stick the pieces that are too small into a bottle with vinegar and rice. Replace cap and shake....should remove all bits of poo!

southeastastra · 24/02/2008 22:10

opps cat, must preview

FourPlusOne · 24/02/2008 22:12

OH, it's proper lego and not duplo - even worse. Yes, toothbrush better than bottle brush for that!

bananaknickers · 24/02/2008 22:14

Warning though, If you are using water and a toothbrush. Stand back. You don't want to flick soggy cat shit in your eyes. Wear saftey googles

tori32 · 24/02/2008 22:15

Pick the big bits out (use rubber gloves). Try putting the lego into a pillow case/ use an old beach rap thing (net) tie the lego in it and sling in the washer. Not to hot cos it could melt. Once out of the wash fill bath with antibac stuff and sling in lego to soak. HTH

Spidermama · 24/02/2008 22:17

I find DH is better than I at doing these jobs.

colditz · 24/02/2008 22:43

I'm not going to fill it with water, the reason being that the cat's poo is generally quite solid, and I don't want to be dealing with poo soup rather than poo log.

Didn't you say it was out in the rain though?

TBH if you've got cats which you handle the chances of coming into contact with cat poo from their feet alone is surely greater than you're going to get from the lego, even if not put through the 95degree wash 20 times?

colditz · 24/02/2008 22:56

I'll risk that, i'm not bringing it in again! Poooer!

Blueskythinker · 24/02/2008 23:37

uugghh...

yes, keep dry if poo dry, then extract clean bits, put in washing m/c.

alternatively you could sell them to an Australian....

Blueskythinker · 25/02/2008 17:41

Horribly fascinated. How did it work out?
