Tiny black bugs

Hi,
The other day, my child and I came back from school covered in these. They were in our face and in our hair.
I assumed we’d gone past a tree or bush and disturbed them.
Now I’ve found them inside my picture frames! Admittedly, they’re only in the frames closest to a window I accidentally left open last night.
What are they? And how do I get rid of them?

So it’s a uk issue rather than a my house issue?
That’s a relief

They are very annoying, especially when they get into your television (yep this is a real problem). Unfortunately nothing you can do and is very much a UK problem, can be worse if you live near a river or crops. They should be gone in a couple of weeks though.

I’ve just cleaned all the frames, disinfected the walls, gone to rinse the cloth and there’s already some behind the glass frames again 😩😩
This is going to be a fun summer!

Yep, thrips. They're sap feeders so indoors with no plants, they won't last long. They're attracted to yellow and blue, so if they're really annoying, maybe some sticky traps hung in the light?

RampantIvy · 10/07/2023 10:49

Are they what we call corn flies? They usually appear at this time of year.

Thank you everyone for your help.
I’ll put some ant traps down and see if they help.

You don’t need to disinfect the walls and put ant traps down FGS. No wonder the planet is fucked.

They are harmless tiny little bugs that will be eaten by other insects and birds and the ones that are unlucky enough to have entered your sterile home will be gone in a couple of days and you won’t have to see them again.

We live next to fields and have to empty our frames out every year! OP, they are completely harmless, leave them be until the end of the season, otherwise you will be constantly clearing out your frames. You don't need to clean them away with product, just dust or hoover them off.

We live next to fields and get these every year. They are rife this week. As someone said upthread, they got in our Tv last year which was annoying. But other than being annoying and making my skin feel like I have things crawling all over me when I don’t for two weeks, I don’t think they are harmful.
One year I sprayed a white vinegar and water solutions around my door frames and window frames and this definitely lessened how many we had inside the house but for the hassle they cause I can’t be bothered 😆

Fly papers are ugly but cheap and effective without spraying stuff around.
