Help me take control of my spare room

My spare room has become a general dumping ground for everything we own that has nowhere to go. We also have way too many books for our puny book shelves. I think the solution is floor-to-ceiling cupboards/shelves but have no idea where to get them. The room is an odd shape and DH and I have no DIY skills so ideally I'd want someone to fit them.

Any ideas?

What about having a car boot to get rid of the clutter?

Then spend the money you make from that getting some paint and an odd job man from the yellow pages to come and put some shelves up?

definitely get a carpenter to build them in for you Not as expensive as you think

Someone on here found this shelving seller, that looked v flexible and good - maybe you could get someone to fit stuff like this (or from Ikea?).

If the books are in your spare room chances are you don't really need them that much. I recycled loads of books, which was painful at first, but I haven't missed them and now I have a lovely clear study!

Thanks for all your replies.
Getting a carpenter to put up the shelves sounds like the best plan. I guess I'd assumed it would be expensive. I'll ask everyone I know if they can recommend someone.

RA - I couldn't bear to recycle my books. They are in my spare room in an attempt to keep the rest of the house clutter free. I do reread them. honest.

Alright I'll let you keep them then

How about I get rid of all the guide books for exotic places that we're not going to visit again for a VERY long time?

DEFINITELY! They'll be out of date before you need them again anyway.

Now for all the books you know you're not going to read again, or those you can easily get from the library if you want to. And then all the self-help books can go - if they haven't worked already they're not going to....

love2sleep · 27/02/2008 15:25

I don't do self-help books.
I have a degree in psychology so I'm not sure if this says something about me or something about self-help books.

Could get rid of the DIY books though...

I had a lot of 'how to declutter books' taking up space.
