Can I wash one pillow in a standard front loading washing machine?

I just don't have time to do the laundromat thing with parking etc.
it's a johnLewis pillow which says to wash in a large capacity machine.
But I thought - maybe just one?
Thanks

Of course.

DustyLee123 · 25/06/2023 12:51

I get two in

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 25/06/2023 12:52

Yeah, I would. My machine isn't particularly large either.

PurplePear7 · 25/06/2023 12:53

I do two at a time, no issues!

Justmuddlingalong · 25/06/2023 12:54

I'd put two in, one around the top of the drum and one lying across the bottom. My machine doesn't like having an unbalanced drum, as the screeching noise it makes will testify.

RunningFromInsanity · 25/06/2023 12:55

I can fit 2-3 in my 7kg washing machine.

babblingbumblingbandofbaboons · 25/06/2023 12:55

I’d do it - though it might come out a bit wet and need spun again to be able to get it dried in a decent timeframe.

What capacity is your machine? I’ve done one pillow in a 7.5kg, managed two in a 9kg machine. Have also managed a low tog KS duvet in the same 9kg, though it does have a feature that it will tell you if it’s overloaded based on the pre wash weight and the cycle chosen so I knew it was ok beforehand.

rwalker · 25/06/2023 13:06

Yes but put a couple of towels in as other wise it won’t bounce round

DelphiniumBlue · 25/06/2023 13:06

Coincidentally, I've just been looking this up, and the received wisdom seems to be that 2 is better than one for purposes of balance, as recommended by
Justmuddlingalong.

Mine is 8kg

What sort of filling is in the pillow?

I'd be chary of putting down or flock in a washer.

Absolutely would - perhaps heeding the other posters I’d balance it with a towel or another pillow, but otherwise should be fine!

Allshallbewell2021 · 25/06/2023 13:17

Thank you all very much!

Check the filling! I've just washed 1 dunelm one (Polyester filling) and it is so heavy the WM won't spin it. It spent 3 days on the line and still so wet we can wring it out. It's being binned. All the others have been fine. Luckily it was DHs. 😉

Allshallbewell2021 · 25/06/2023 13:25

🤞 it's hypoallergenic so it will be 💯 manmade 🤞🤞🤞

More than likely wouldn’t spin because it’s unbalanced
you need to put something else in couple of wet towels
your washer will try drum going backwards and forwards but won’t go into fast spin as unbalanced
wring it out a bit then Put in with towels

Allshallbewell2021 · 25/06/2023 13:37

It's working at the moment. I put it in with a towel 🙈

There's a low level clang but no total rejection of the wash..... 🤞

grimmers44 · 25/06/2023 14:03

It may not spin as it can be unbalanced (I got a washing machine engineer out to tell me that 😬)

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/06/2023 14:05

We can fit two in ours, they squish right down when they’re wet.

Dry on cool in the dryer though: made the mistake of using warm once and the feathers smelled awful!

lampformyfeet · 25/06/2023 14:07

I wash 2 with a towel stuffed in the centre to balance things

TeaAndStrumpets · 25/06/2023 14:09

Agree with others, two should be fine. I always want to wash pillows when we have a heatwave. They smell lovely after drying in the sunshine! Mine are goose feather and down. However, I once made the mistake of washing a memory foam cushion....do not do this!

IrisGold · 25/06/2023 14:10

Best to put two in as it helps them retain shape.
I find some pillows survive and others come out so mangled they get thrown away, about 70/30 I have to wash them regularly as have allergies.

areyouhavinglaugh · 25/06/2023 14:12

I put them on delicate wash or wool wash, they don't come out all weird and bulky at one end!

BertieBotts · 25/06/2023 14:14

Yes, but it might go lumpy. I recommend adding dryer balls or tennis balls.

Clanging means the drum is unbalanced and could damage the machine, you might want to stop it and rebalance it (if you can).
