Sick of houseflies! How do you keep them out/get rid of them?!

Our kitchen always has bloody flies. I don't have a kitchen bin.. I throw rubbish straight in to the wheelie bin after each meal prep, which is nowhere near the kitchen door.

My worktops are clear, and cleaned every time I cook.

No pets

I hate them! I want a fly killer but I can't stand fly papers (vile). Should I try something over the kitchen door? I need it open else we'll bake

Fly screens.
We still get the occasional one in sometimes but so much better than before we had them.

JaukiVexnoydi · 21/06/2023 22:48

Our cat catches and eats anything larger than a grain of rice. For the tiny little fruit flies we have tiny little bottle-traps near the fruit bowl which lure them in and don't let them out - much nicer than fly paper.

Check under the sofa in case there's half a mouldy apple under there hiding - you may have a lot of flies if there's a nice nursery for maggots somewhere unexpected.

If they work similarly to the ones we use for the tiny flies here then they would be effective - given that they are only

  • given that they are quite cheap and the reviews say they last most of the season, I think I would tape some cheery wrapping paper around so I didn't have to see the corpses and throw it away and buy a new one when full.

We have a 'Zap Bat' from Amazon. Any flies are given the chance to fly out of multiple open windows and doors but if they outstay their welcome they get fried. Not sorry- they are the bane of my life along with big moths that fly at your face!

Jonnycakes · 21/06/2023 23:30

I’ve heard (but not yet tried) a clear plastic sandwich bag filled with water and pennies hung over an open door or window will stop them coming in. I didn’t want to start pinning things in my plaster so haven’t tested it yet!

Wasywasydoodah · 21/06/2023 23:34

I have a fly zapper like this and it’s ace. It makes a massive difference to the mozzies and regular flies in our house. We live a bit rural so we had loads.

That does work….I tried it and it made a huge difference. We had hardly any flies come in afterwards.

Thank you, that’s good to know, sandwich bags on the shopping list tomorrow to finally give it a go!

It didn't work for us, unfortunately :( Nut we live pretty rural and it seems everyone has the same problem

I have those fly catcher things too. They are supposed to be used in the garden though- so I have 1 on the fence and another near the bird feeder. They smell like something rotten- so not something you want near the house windows/back doors etc.

They work FAR better than I thought! In hot weather, you can top up the water inside because it does evaporate. When its full, or end of season, you just dig a little hole in the soil and empty it. They sell refill sachets of the powder, so no need to throw the whole bottle away!

Magnetic insect screen mesh in your doorway?

GoogleMeNot · 22/06/2023 00:44

Try a Citronella candle. Smells lovely and repels flies. I bought one from the Octo Store on Amazon and has been brilliant.

Theoldgreygoose · 22/06/2023 01:23

An automatic fly sprayer. It seems to keep most of them away, I can always tell when it has run out of spray.

tolerable · 22/06/2023 01:53

dunno why its called white-its defo see through vinegar..in a tiny tcup on your window ledge /defo keeps em quiet..in death

tolerable · 22/06/2023 01:54

..lies.relevant only at silly fruit flies...

tobee · 22/06/2023 02:03

I use those sticky tapes (bit like sellotape) that hang from the ceiling or door frame etc. They work well but are really incredibly sticky and awkward to dispose of. I once had one fall from the ceiling and get stuck in my hair which wasn't fun. They look awful too. But they do work and no nasty chemicals or anything.

This. I have them and have no idea why most don't. They work fantastically. Magnets up the middle you part to go through and they snap back together after. You won't regret it OP!

starrynight21 · 22/06/2023 03:30

Fly screens on your doors and windows - is this not a thing in the UK ? I'm in Australia and all windows and doors have them. I haven't seen a fly inside in years.

morelippy · 22/06/2023 03:59

Oo some interesting responses thank you.

I would like to avoid anything that collects dead flies.. or smells really but am interested in the fly screens. Will have a Google.

Fly screens aren't a typical thing in the UK. We have some after last summer when the Council failed to collect all the black bins once in the height of summer - they're only done every other week so 4 weeks between collection was ... something.

I have magnetic tape placed strategically around the window frames, then a piece of mesh cut roughly to size and then strong magnets to hold them in place. In a strong wind they sometimes blow in but mostly they have been very useful.

Carpediem15 · 22/06/2023 07:17

Fly screens for windows also fixed with magnets and chain curtain for back door which opens inwards.
For fruit flies use jar with cider vinegar and something sweet in there and keep fruit covered with mesh guards.
