Bad grease stains

Anyone know how to get bad grease marks out of clothing?

I stupidly left some dog biscuits in a coat pocket that have released their oils due to the heat! I now have a massive grease stain, I haven't washed it yet as I know it's best to do something with it first but previously I've tried pre treatments etc that just don't work!

Anything tried and tested?

put talc on the stain then wash it

I use washing up liquid on grease stains as a pretreatment, then cold wash.

Had vaseline leak through onto some light trousers recently; first got some normal washing up liquid and rubbed that on with a fairly rough cloth, then rinse.
This improved it quite a bit, could probably have gone round again and got rid of it totally but then also tried Vanish powder; as per the instructions, mix up a bit with some warm water in the scoop and rub in to the stain, then put it on a short fairly cool cycle.
You can still see it a little bit if you know where to look but it it's not noticeable

Washing up liquid, and here Fairy is magic, I wonder what they put in it, then a teaspoon of washing powder on top and done.

Cornflour for a bit to absorb the grease.
Then washing up liquid soak.
Wash in a tepid wash.

Another vote for neat washing up liquid rubbed in. Scoop of vanish/similar added to washing powder.

My polycotton Rohan Bags trousers, the thinking man's jeans!!, suck up oil/fat from food or whatever.

Johnsons 'Shout' is what they recommend and it's OK but we've found a product called K2R detachant that's in every supermarket in France - where we holiday - is much better.

Otherwise neat WuL or washing detergent rubbed in before washing seem reasonably effective.

So do I. This always works for me.

I've had mixed success with washing up liquid and find talc better.

Eucalyptus essential oil rubbed into the stain works, but you'll be need to wash the garment separately and do an extra rinse, and then re-wash as normal, or your entire load will come out smelling like a pack of Lockets (bitter experience talking here).

I've used Elbowgrease (kitchen spray) on clothing with grease/oil stains and found it good. Dh is constantly getting stains on his work shirts because of eating on the go (it's a regular 'discussion' between us) and after a particularly greasy mess hitting his shirt again he tried treating it with stain remover and putting it through a wash but it was still visible, I sprayed on Elbowgrease, left it for a while, sprayed again and stuck it through another wash, no sign of stain but unfortunately I'm sure there'll be more to deal with soon. Anyone know where I could get adult size bibs??

millymae · 26/06/2023 00:41

I have found Dr Beckmans Stain Devils for Lubricants and Grease removes grease stains entirely.

HappiDaze · 26/06/2023 01:10

I used vanish carpet cleaner on my fabric sofa after some Lindt white chocolate melted into it which is very greasy. That did the trick

GellerYeller · 26/06/2023 01:15

My mum once asked a friend, who owned an Indian restaurant, how they ever got the white tablecloths clean: Starch. So Shout, as a PP said, would be the thing. I also second washing up liquid neat onto the stain.

rileynexttime · 26/06/2023 08:55

@GellerYeller has Shout similar ingredients to starch ?

GellerYeller · 26/06/2023 15:58

I thought Shout starch was what my gran used when I was growing up but having looked, it might not have starch in -it looks like standard stain sprays. You can get spray starch by Dr Beckmann though.

rileynexttime · 26/06/2023 17:58

I see starch has borax in it so I guess that must be what gets the stains out.

GellerYeller · 26/06/2023 18:17

@rileynexttime Yes I bet that’s it. I had a hairdresser who used to advise borax for removing product build up in your hair 😱!
